Bunnies are Gathering

Fie listened to the young woman who was talking about her homeworld. Isfan was and exchange student from the Vella Crean and she spun the most wonderful stories. Isfan could usually be found around some dragons, which made her all the more alluring for the young girl. Once more, Fie wondered if her parents might be at the Vella Crean. It seemed like it might be a real possibility.
Across the circle of young dragons and children sat Zern and Stu. Though very different the boys had formed a decent friendship. Stu was having a hard time at home and appreciated the fact that Zern was a good listener. Zern in turn felt happy to be able to be of help to someone. As an orphan - or abandoned child, he didn't know which he was - Zern knew how lonely it could be to not have anyone to turn to.
Across the dunes Bona was talking to Mala, the fae or pixie hybrid was exotic enough to have peaked the other young woman's interest and since they were of a similar age, Mala had agreed to exchange stories. The two girls were joined by Oner who felt too old to dream of distant worlds though he most certainly still did.
The sun started to drop towards the sea and the children and young dragons started to drift away, heading home. The gathered humans lingered a little longer in the dunes because, as usual, Bona had news.
"I've heard people talk about a bunny run."
"Didn't that happen before we were born?" Oner asked.
"It's been about 2 decades yes." Bona said matter-of-factly, But it's possible that new eggs have been hidden."
"Wouldn't people have posted a notice of it?" Fie asked.
"Bunnies can be pranksters." Mala grinned. She was the eldest but no-one around would guess that, "Or so I've heard."
"They might be near the old aquarium." Zern said slowly, "Not too many people go there."
The six youngsters continued talking and finally agreed to go look for eggs after dinner. Searching on an empty stomach was not fun after all.

Stu had to sneak out as he was once again grounded, but he'd done so before and knew what to look out for. He was the first to arrive. Or so he thought. When he stepped toward the entrance, Zern was already there. By the look of it, the offworlder had eaten his dinner at the cave entrances.
"Aren't you afraid of shadow dragons?" Stu asked.
"There's nothing here. Only some fishies." Zern shrugged.
Before Stu could ask, Oner and Bona appeared. Not much later Fie ran toward them and lastly, a yawning Mala trudged along.
"I always get sleepy after eating." she explained.
"Will yu be able to look for eggs?" Bona needled.
"Oh I will find some. That is if they're really here."
The six made the best of the fading light and started to explore. It became clear that nothing was hiding in plain sight. Of course that was to be expected. Otherwise people would know of these eggs. Fie wondered if they'd even hatch if they found them. Dragon hatchlings knew who they wanted to bond. Wouldn't they just refuse to hatch without the right people around? She tried to keep up but was already preparing herself for disappointment.
But then, she was the first to stumble upon a hidden gem. Quite literally. Fie stumbled and fell, crashing into an egg. A loud crack broke the quiet of the evening and next thing she knew, she was looking in the eyes of pastel violet spunky dragon with large pink spots.
"No pessimistic thoughts." the hatchling spoke in her mind, "only happy thoughts."
"Okay." Fie squeaked.
"Can you guess my name?"
"Iveta." Fie whispered, afraid to speak up.
After it became apparent that Fie had bonded, the others ramped up their searching, finally making an honest effort. None of them had actually believed they would find eggs. But now their excitement grew and soon would alert people that something was up.
It was Stu who bonded next. He managed to find an egg hiding behind some shrubs. He gentle knocked on the shell and a small paw knocked back from within. Then a larger paw crashed through the shell and a red bunny appeared bum first. Yellow speckles and orange tips gave the dragon a feisty appearance and that was no illusion.
"We will race and play and do great things!" the red bunny said excitedly.
"Kurduk?" Stu asked.
"That's my name, don't wear it out."
At that moment, Stu wasn't even thinking about whether or not he would get into trouble over sneaking out and bonding. But he would later agree that whatever punishment he had received, it had all been worth it.
Bona looked between some rocks. A smooth curve caught her eyes and there it was, a perfectly blending grey egg. What kind of dragon would hatch from it? She didn't have much time to think about that as within seconds a lime-green bunny cast it eyes upon her and crawled to all fours.
"I've been waiting for you to find me." he said, "Or well, anyone but I'm glad it was you who found me."
"Your charm could use some work, Jaruko." Bona remarked.
"Just kidding."
Not much farther, Oner had found another egg, this one grass green with yellow spots. How they could have missed it before was a mystery. Maybe the bunny dragons of the Isle were actually dropping these eggs at this minute. Whatever the case may be, once Oner touched the egg, it's shell fell away and he found his hand on the head of a light blue bunny with purple spots and stripes.
"Nice to meet you." she said, "My name is Loubna."
"I know." Oner replied, "Did you teleport your egg in front of me?"
Somehow he got the impression that that was what had happened.
"Now what peculiar ideas are in your head? I did no such things." Loubna teased.
Mala knew how to play hide and seek. She'd done so many times when she was younger. The best hideaways were usually high up. So the small hybrid human climbed a tree and grinned when she actually did find an egg there.
Without much ceremony, she rubbed the egg and below her hands, the egg cracked and the bunny within appeared. Mala was met with a black void marred with a rainbow of speckles. Two bright yellow eyes look up and the dragoness gave a moody chirp.
"I was just dreaming and now I'm awake."
"Well sorry, Maetira. I guess we can go home now and sleep so you can continue your dreams."
"No. Now that I'm awake I want food!"
"Fine fine."
When the five had returned, they found Zern still sitting at the cave entrance. Troubled, Bona asked:
"Didn't you want to look with us?"
Zern looked up at the older girl and shook his head, "I already found one earlier. Hikrus is sleeping in the cave."
To which the others started talking and yelling about how he could have kept that to himself. None were actually mad but Zern still felt a little frightened until a small cyan-coloured hatchling with mint-coloured stripes appeared from behind him to offer some support.
"Hikrus was just impatient." Zern told them, "He couldn't wait."
The dragon yawned and looked all but impatient: "I'm hungry and sleepy." he communicated
But it didn't matter anyway as not long after, the six new dragonriders were found by some of their more experienced colleagues.
