2. IMPRESSION
“It’s time” came
the telepathic call to any who would hear it.
Candidates, spectators and officials all hurried to the designated place
in the Drift. The drak mothers still had their wings screening their eggs
from view, and dozens of the hundred or more visible eggs were rocking
where they sat, the little dragons within working on the double to out and
find their One. Though not all of these would need to bond to survive.
Eggs hatched one after the other, the resulting hatchlings showcasing a
myriad of features, colours and patterns, though with the expected white
and snowflakes being the most abundant. Trying to follow the hatchlings
soon became impossible as they mixed with the novos.
Sharp claws kicked a hole in the next eggshell, and then a dark
silver hatchling with vibrant cobalt wings, crest, and underbelly slipped
neatly out. He yawned, the sapphire gems on his face and shoulders
catching the light.
The dark silver with the sapphires had terrorized a few candidates before
he found who he was looking for and started to sneak towards her.
Yishia caught something move in her peripheral vision and turned and
looked at the hatchling.
“What are you doing, Yioth’Asva?” she asked, stunned into silence by
knowing the dragon’s - her dragon’s - name before he told it to her.
‘Surprising you?’ The hatchling
blinked. ‘Are you surprised?’
“Yes. Completely.”
