Cwerty turned her eggs dutifully. She'd done
so a million times before. Her gestures had become routine but her mind was
still on the job which is how she noticed the change. The tiny tremor had hardly
been perceivable, but she knew.
Rising from the sands, she let out a modest call along with a very clear mental
message that everyone waiting on the hatching would better be here asap or else.
It didn't take long for the candidates and spectators to turn up. The first to
arrive was the green-haired, pink-hued detective. He'd been investigating
reports on the gem thieves he was tracking nearby. He'd agonised briefly about
what should take precedence but had decided on the hatching in the end. The
trail had very much run cold. Blair Rhein was followed by Yimeo Inavito, the
multi-limbed otter lady who'd been enjoying a swim in the ocean. She was still
quite wet but luckily there was little wind on this day. The third to arrive was
Ashun Ventul, shrunken down to a more practical size. The brown-yellow dragoness
was helping the last arrival, Lucia, walk on the sands. She could hardly keep
the feathers of her wings still, so excited was she. The woman beside her smiled
as she took a seat in a chair she was offered. She could very well stand but
people insisted she take it easy. Lucia was indeed prone to illness but the
ocean breeze had done wonders on her health.
The candidates and spectators did not have to wait long - as some had feared -
since the eggs seemed to respond to the crowd outside. One hatchling finally
broke through. His hide the faded blue of Beryl but dotted in bright Coppery
Orange. He very much took to his father's colours but the pattern was that of
his mother. Also much like Aiburath, this hatchling appeared to be a bit
restless. He paced across the sands, prowled closer to the candidates but
hesitated. Until finally he decided.
"Blair, a life fighting
for justice seems like
it would fit me best.
My name is Grunhaith."
Blair nodded and then ushered his new bond off the sands. He was more of the
silent type and a tad timid so he preferred not answering before a crowd of
people.
A fully Emerald Green dragoness hatched next. She was neither patterned nor
striped nor metallic. And this suited her just fine. She didn't need high
expectations for herself. And she was perfectly fine with a leisurely life in
the country. Just the type of life she would get with a certain woman.
"Lucia, My name is Spenaith. I'd love to meet your
children and pay with them."
"Are you certain? they can be quite the handful." Lucia smiled but she already
knew that this combination would work.
The third egg managed to topple over and a dragonet resembling the first, with
Copper patches against a Turquoise hide, spilled on the sands. Instead of
looking at the candidates, this little one looked at the sky. And sure enough a
dragon flew overhead, The dragoness proceeded to land, responding to the male
hatchling's cry. It was Abhlmeith, one of Cwerty's daughters from a previous
clutch who'd helped her mother along. She'd been away on an impromptu errand and
couldn't believe that she'd almost missed the event!
"I was
looking for you."
the hatchling said.
"I did say I wanted to take one of you home, Azerty." the dragoness, Abhlmeith, said,
"And hey, our names match."
A dark blue foot kicked through the shell of one of the last two eggs. A second
followed, and then an elbow joint and a head. The hatchling had some trouble
getting out of his shell and it was Cwerty who expertly tapped the shell to
finally shatter. Rolling out the male Tanzanite-coloured dragon was covered in
sand but though dusted, his wings were clearly green. Dusting himself off, he
gave a small roar and headed for Ashun Ventul who had felt the connection from
the moment they'd locked eyes.
"Nice to meet you Zacour" she said verbally as a
courtesy to the humans present.
"You're mine!" Zacour
replied in the same fashion with a very passionate tone and then dropped down in
front of his new bond, exhausted and ready to turn in.
The last egg broke neatly in half, revealing a turquoise-winged copper
dragoness. She shook her head gently, then flapped her wings as if to see if
everything worked before taking a few steps. The only candidate remaining was
Yimeo Inavito but even had she hatched first, Verderame would have chosen the
her. There was an allure to the otter lady that had Verderame mesmerised and she
had a heart big enough to allow for a little more. And that little more was just
what Verderame desired. She wanted a pack.
"You may call me
Verderame."
Yimeo read her bond's intentions and agreed: "Let's stay and see who wants to
join us."
