Hathians had gathered at Lantessama
Isle. The locals were used to mysterious happenings so they weren't
immediately worried. They did however give the group of 11 hathians their
space as they circled ever wider on the beaches, their scales making
rattling sounds of agitation. Suddenly, as if sparked by a hidden signal,
the females sped off in different directions and the males chased them,
making it clear to everyone around just what was happening. The hathians
launched themselves into short glides and sped through the dunes, making
use of the sandy hills for cover. Clever females twisted through the
terrain, sometimes causing males to smack into the sand as they missed a
turn. People and dragons watched from a safe distance.
Yellow Vaygei and Blue Mathis had not sped away when the chase started.
They were a mated pair and they had made it clear that they would not
allow others to interrupt their private time. None of the other four
females had made such a choice prior and the 5 males chasing all had a
good chance of winning their favour. Although, two of the males seemed to
be more focused on each other. Brothers Iramara and Yotogi, both
silver-horned yellow hathians, seemed to be making the chase a race to
determine which was better. They argued and hissed, puffing up their
scales and rattling their glider sails. The females were less than
impressed and turned their attention onto the others.
Blue Daine used her wits and spy/scout experience to keep ahead. Her
silver horns lent her some authority and a lot of the males had been
interested in her. She easily outran the two yellow brothers and sent Red
Vios packing with a little sandstorm that left him frustrated and sulking.
Daine considered her options. Silver Yeldou was an optimistic sort, a
leader who inspired hope while Vilyarus was a gentle homebody with unusual
colouring. There was something in both of them that appealed to her. And
faced with that dilemma, Daine decided that she did not even need to make
a choice.
Red Aless wound her way through the dunes and was suddenly met with her
mirror image. Briefly disoriented, the female red was caught by Red Vios
who, with his aggressive nature, did not stop there and went on to conquer
another. Aless was left to her own devices and she wondered what would
happen next. It was thus that Vilyarus found her and ended the chase for
both of them.
Red Vios, still angry and testy, sniffed the air and found the scent of a
promising female. He tracked her, ignoring obstacles, until he happened
upon Green Cheas. Silver Yeldou gave the two a wide berth as he looked for
another. The scent of female was heavy and he knew there was another
nearby. He took a few turns, allowing his luck to lead him and was
rewarded when he stumbled upon Green Zukoa who had so far escaped being
caught.
Green Cheas and Green Zukoa happened to end up close to each other after
their initial matings and they suddenly found themselves chased by the two
yellow brothers who had so far not been able to catch any of the
participating females. Tired from their previous chase, the greens
succumbed to the young duo.
Hatching
Story
Night was falling and a warm breeze caressed
the island. There were hardly clouds to obscure the night sky that looked
especially magical with stars and nebulous wisps. No night ever looked the
same but it was rare to see such a spectacle. But not many eyes were cast
upwards. Most people were gathered around the Island sands where torches
provided light and extra warmth. Five female hathians protected a
collection of eggs and the six males that had sired them eyes the
spectators and candidates warily. In fact, not too many candidates had
been selected as some of the parenting hathians were intending to take a
few of the offspring home.
Of the gathered candidates, 4 were human, two were Lanuthan twins but
there was also a couple of elfs, a dwarf and a lion-like Liron. But maybe
the most conspicuous of the candidates was the hathian Brasedi, who
although he claimed he was red, looked very much purple-pink and blue. As
the mascot of Carramba High he had brought merchandise and a big banner
with him and he was now proudly standing below that banner and waited for
newly hatched hathians to join him.
Spurned on by the wild cheers Brasedi was shouting, one of the eggs
cracked and a yellow female spilled out. She shook her head as she looked
around. When her eyes focused on the cheering hathian, she got up and
skipped toward him, very much wanting to skip and twirl and maybe shake
some pompons? How unusual for a yellow hathian. As baby hathians could not
speak yet, it was her mother who had decided on and declared her name:
"Wrasau."
As if a dam had been breached by that first hatching, several
more eggs cracked and broke and suddenly a dozen baby hathians were
traversing the sands. Their mothers kept careful watch of where they went
and the waiting candidates tried to coax the newly hatched to come to
them.
A blue female cautiously made her way to Akta, the female Lanuthan
rogue. She carefully sniffed the lanky young woman and then sat down
beside her. "Raihne." Aless
proclaimed.
Two sisters from Daine's clutch, one green and one red, nearly crashed
into each other but they managed to straighten themselves out and headed
to where they wanted to go. The red female appreciatively looked at the
Liron Julka and her draconic companion Ashanel and purred her
approval at the resourceful tribeswoman. "Ziene."
Daine nodded approvingly.
The green female of the same clutch meanwhile, stopped in front of her
father Yeldou and happily sagged against his bigger body.
"Paulla." Daine chuckled.
A duo of hatchlings found each other on the sands and decided that they
liked each other enough to head to a candidate together. The red male was
protective and valiant while the green female was dainty and a bit shy.
They walked toward one of the space engineers, Wade, and got his
attention by clutching his pants and accidentally ripping it as it had
seen a lot of wear. "Fuego." Cheas
named her son. "Nahro." Aless added
the name of her daughter.
In the meantime, Red Vios was the subject of an adoring gaze. The
green female hathian chirped happily and approached the adult hathian
affectionately and wouldn't leave him. Never mind that he hoped this pack
would go to his son, this little lady seemed to like him quite enough.
"Chiree."
Vaygei whispered to the red hathian.
Though several of Zukoa's offspring were on the sands, none had yet
to bond. The green hathian looked on, feeling just a little anxious.
Suddenly a little tail entwined with hers and she saw a green hathian
hatchling that had the colouring of her wings, a bright spring green. Her
daughter sent Zukoa supportive thoughts and warmth and a promise to stay
with her. "Abita." Zukoa sighed and
pulled her daughter just a little closer.
Two of Daine's babies, though fathered by different hathians, made their
way toward the female dwarf Adur. The industrious woman with a love
for brewing found herself assailed by two males, one white and one blue
hatchling. While the white happily head-butted the dwarf, looking for
attention and food, the blue waited patiently and observed with
intelligent eyes. "I've called my white son
Kiften and my blue son Ozram." Daine told Adur.
Although dragons were bonding, more kept hatching and it was difficult to
keep track of just how many eggs were left and how many hatchlings were on
the sands. But the parents kept a close eye out and ensured that each and
every one received a name and that their bonds were notified of what it
was.
A second green from Zukoa's clutch, this one a male, seemed very practical
and efficient as he took his time to look at all the candidates. His
choice fell on Orne, the Lanuthan ranger who was the older twin to
Akta who had bonded earlier. The hatchling called and Zukoa provided his
name: "Quivrin." before the hatchling
stepped closer to Orne.
A silver hatchling made his way across the sands, a natural-born leader,
he seemed intent on straightening out a few of his siblings, calling them
to attention, before he continued on to Joul, the leader of the
engineering crew of a stranded spaceship. "Choemu."
Cheas supplied.
Another silver hatchling, this one a female, was gathering her own little
pack among her clutchmates. She carefully persuaded a female red who was
rather snappy and short-tempered and lured away a blue male who had been
stalking a green male in a playful but thorough manner. The silver decided
the gentle and somewhat wimpy green could come as well and carefully kept
him away from the blue. She then chided the green who had previously
approached Vios and quietly made certain that the red, prickly
hathian knew that she was in charge of this pack.
"My silver daughter is called Riduelle." Daine told Vios.
"The red one is named Uraea." Cheas
added, "Dasgim." Aless hissed pointing
at the blue. "Mordo." Zukoa said and
sent her son encouragement for he was more special than any could guess.
A playful, and easily-distracted white hatchling crashed into a blue male
when she tried to chase a firefly. The duo tripped and rolled right in
front of the spaceship mechanic Sing. The woman tried to detangle
the two and mananged to look in their eyes and found that their tumble
might not have been as accidental as it had seemed. Chuckling she hugged
the white female and then dragged the blue one in the hug.
"Vuella, my little prankster." Aless told her.
"And my son is called Tashryn." Zukoa
added.
A yellow male checked out the remaining candidates and let his gaze wander
over the waiting parents. He could go where he wanted. But making the
choice was difficult. It would impact his life and he was very young. He
let out a frustrated little growl and was nudged by a practical and
commanding silver female who directed him toward one of the elves.
Beiro watched them approach and figured something about the duo fit.
"Baugor." Cheas identified her yellow
son. "Medithe." Aless added.
A duo of blues was playing catch and after a while they extended their
attention outward and decided that stalking the lion would be a good idea.
Julka let them get close but it was Ashanel who lashed out with her
tail and caught the two off guard only to get buried in small hathian
bodies. "Phoeka." Cheas saif,
indicating the female blue. "Tiruz."
Aless called the male blue.
Another duo, a green female and a blue male were making a lot of racket.
The green seemed to be trying to sing as she let out some impressive high
wails. The blue in the meanwhile was tapping and hitting everything he
found, looking for rhythm. The two naturally gravitated toward Brasedi
who was still cheering while the first of his new pack lay sleeping in a
heap of plushies. "Estee." Aless
muttered, maybe not all that happy with such a loud hatchling.
"Nivaen." Zukoa added the name of her
blue son.
One of the red daughters of Vaygei got in a little squabble with two
half-siblings from Zukoa's clutches. The red male and blue male, though by
no means small, seemed to not be able to put up much of a fight when the
female red got serious. She was fast and furious and the blue male quickly
ducked away behind silver Yeldou who placated the two reds before
they could hurt each other. "Zoeny."
Vaygei named her feisty daughter. "Red Ykram and
Blue Jonder." Zukoa added.
The second blue hatchling of Daine and one of the reds from Aless' clutch
approached Zukoa, looking for her protection. She gladly gave it to
them and allowed them to crawl beneath her wings for comfort and safety.
The two mothers nodded, hathians forming packs was a good sight to see and
they informed their fellow mother with the names of their offspring:
"Burda." Daine labeled her daughter. "Temseo."
Aless told them.
Four hatchlings had banded together on the sands. The male green, male and
female red and yellow female seemed to like each other but they did not
seem all that certain about where to go. The green wanted to bond quickly,
hoping to find a warm companion and a nice bed to sleep in. The yellow was
however frightful, and not all that certain they should bond at all. And
the two reds were eyeing everyone gathered with a wary look, their talons
drawn and ready to pounce on any who meant them harm. They had stayed this
way for a while, watching as others bonded. Then suddenly, the white who
had previously bonded the dwarf Adur, found his greater calling and
he called the four over, promising happiness and play to all who joined
him. Faced with such lofty visions, the four could not resist and joined
both Kiften and Ozram.
"Ginudo." Cheas introduced her green
son. "Heileen." Vaygei called out her
red daughter's name. "Vespira." Zukoa
urged her yellow daughter on. "Xsiuro."
Aless shared the name of her red son.
Clove, an earthblood elf with antlers, stood far to the side,
hidden in shadows and away from the crowd. He was used to keeping his
interactions to a minimum. It was this that lured an elusive black
hatchling to him. Her egg had been hidden as her mother had had a good
idea of what was inside and so no-one had even noticed her hatching. Only
the brief flashing of draconic eyes told Clove that her mother had seen
the bond. "Veneda." Daine let him know
privately. Not much later, a blue male sniffed the air around him, finding
something of particular interest. He quickly followed the scent and ended
up in front of Clove too. Though a bit confused about the elf in front,
the blue wanted to stick close to the one behind. So he compromised and
bonded the elf as well. "Locam." Cheas told the elf her son's name.
The elf left quietly and hardly anyone noticed as a green and yellow
female got tangled as they hatched. People waited for the hatchlings to
sort themselves, fearful of hurting their fragile wings or limbs. But the
two seemed well and truly tangled. The green fidgeted endlessly, trying to
get loose with a limitless stubbornness while the yellow kept still and
seemed to be waiting for something. Finally Yeldou stepped in,
helping the two to their feet. The two females then followed him like
little ducklings and he accepted that his pack had grown.
"Isreen." Cheas told him the name of
her green daughter. "Garkae." Daine
added the name of her yellow daughter.
While Julka was tending to the two blues that would join her when
she went back to her people, three more hatchlings approached her. A pack
after all needed to be bigger. A green female sidled up against the two
napping blues and quickly fell asleep too. "Aerou."
Zukoa called out the name of her daughter though she didn't rise. A male
yellow the young green had befriended took a little longer to be convinced
but he seemed to put his trust in Ashanel and camped himself between the
dragon's legs. "Huillo." Vaygei
shared. And then a white came closer as well. The look in his eyes one of
wonder as he compared his colouring to that of Ashanel. Would he become as
graceful and as fast? Would his horns look as dashingly gold as her fur?
Only time would tell. "Kraeye." Daine
said.
The number of hatchlings was dwindling and people were growing rowdier as
the night progressed. Cheers and shouts sounded and some hatchlings
quickly fled toward Zukoa. A male blue peeked out, interested in
the sounds but a bit overwhelmed while his male white companion seemed to
prefer to chatter and squeak at the other hatchlings in Zukoa's care.
Talkative and excitable, the white male had the others awake within
seconds. "Loeke." Cheas told Zukoa the
name she had given her blue son. "Paidu."
Vaygei shared the same about her white son.
The last of Daine's children, a yellow female, had traversed the sands and
was now sticking close to Kaya, the jane-of-all-trades communications
officer of the stranded spaceship expedition. She quietly petted the shy
hatchling and was surprised herself when she heard Daine in her mind:
"Mauve."
People were getting tired but still Brasedi was cheering and his
gusto drew the remaining two hatchlings. A male red and a white female
looked curiously as Brasedi struck a few poses that nobody on the island
would recognise as quite common memes. But Brasedi did look like fun and
the two decided they might as well go with him. The red was eager to join
Brasedi's pack, ready to prove himself strong and able. The white had no
such objectives, she just wanted to party and the images Brasedi shared
seemed to indicate that school life would be fun.
"Fourno." Zukoa sent off her last baby who was bright red.
"Shuula." Aless presented her second
white daughter.
With all eggs hatched and all hatchlings bonded or cared for, people
started to make their way to either their beds or the afterparty.
