The Hatching
Ravenna was excited, but still
sleepy when she heard the cries of hatching nearby. Used as she was to
living in the evening and night noon was still too early to wake up. Of
course she had to for classes, but apparently today they had let her sleep.
Her mind cleared up and her conscious got a hold of the cries: "Hatching!".
For a moment she needed to think to know where she was.
"Coffee. I'd kill for coffee." she mumbled.
"I can give you water." Reggie said and smiled. How anyone could be so happy
was beyond her. Ravenna turned her head into her pillow and closed her eyes.
"You don't want to miss the dragons, right?"
Dragons. That word brought it all back. The weird chick with her dragon
tattoo had brought her here, into an unknown bed.
"Are they hatching?"
"Yes sleepy. Now hurry!"
Within five minutes Ravenna was ready. She and Reggie hurried to the Sands
and waited. Upon their entry a small blue silver dragon had shed the egg of
his hide and was moving toward some boys. Ravenna didn't give him a second
look, but Reggie softly cursed... maybe if he had been sooner.
A small pink silver hatched next. Nice for that typical girlie look, but not
something you'd bring to a club, Ravenna thought. Not much later a green
silver hatched. Now this one was different. The dragon's skin was patterned
with an almost electric look to it. She got everyone's attention immediatly.
But she only was interested in one of them. And that one was Ravenna.
"My name is Rixorieth."
she said and let the rest speek for itself.
Reluctantly Ravenna left Reggie alone and watched from a distance. While
Rixorieth was gulping down meat from her hands not one dragon looked at
Reggie. Ravenna couldn't help but feel sorry for her friend. But there were
still enough eggs left.
"I'll come again every hatching until he does impress." Ravenna promised
herself, straightening her back.
"A little lower please. I can't reach it that far up."
"Sorry Rixorieth."
Green-Silver Rixorieth
Weyrlings
A few months after Rixorieth's hatching another clutch was ready to hatch.
So far Reggie hadn't been in luck with finding a dragon, but sooner or later
it would happen. Rixorieth had assured Ravenna that the right dragon for
everyone was out there. And indeed, not much later Reggie managed to
bond a night blue duowinged dragon.
"Really, I wouldn't
know where that dragon puts all that
wingsail though." Rixorieth remarked, yet again trying to keep her wings
from getting in the way of practice. To improve their agility, the weyrling
master had given them a large ball, not unlike the ones used at water polo.
The weyrlings who'd just gotten the knack of flying had to try and keep it
airborne while passing it to each other. Suffice to say Rixorieth hadn't
quite gotten the hang of it. She often got hit and the dents in her hide
took hours of rubbing with oil to smooth out.
Adults
It had only been a month since Kaoverth had stopped growing. But to Kaoverth
that time had seemed like an eternity. he'd been waiting to fly this one
important female since the time he'd been old enough to understand the
desires. He didn't have them then, He didn't know when he'd get them, but he
already knew the one female that would need to be his was Silver-Green
Rixioreth. And today was the day.
"Think quick." Rixioreth laughed her
tingly laugh in his mind and Kaoverth could only look up to see a silver
streak mar the twilight sky.
"I'm coming!" he called after her.
He bugled and with one sweep from his wings, he was airborne, searching the
skies around him for oddly bright colours.
Rixioreth flew, trying to get away. She was chasing the sun. After all her
light-coloured skin was more than noticeable in the night sky, it was a dead
give-away about her whereabouts. Kaoverth on the other hand with his
night-blue hide was almost invisible at this time, when the stars hadn't yet
appeared.
On the ground their two riders were waiting, each caught up in their
dragon's mind. The flight was closed and thus could take all night. But on
the other hand, how could they be certain that other dragons wouldn't join
them? Was it wise for Kaoverth to take his time? Or for Rixioreth to try and
catch the sun?
Finally Kaoverth set off in the direction Rixorieth had taken before him. He
chased the remaining string of colours on the horizon and darted past the
clouds. Knowing Rixioreth wouldn't keep still when he got close, he called
out her name in his head as loud as he could.
"Rixioreth! Rixioreth!"
Rixioreth heard him, and he was well on his way to catching up to her.
"Youth." she smirked, even if she was
only half a year older than him.
"I heard that!" Kaoverth called back.
"You're so close already." Rixioreth
said, a bit disappointed, "I'd hoped to fly against
the setting sun."
"We'll have to settle for twilight."
Kaoverth said.
"But not quite yet." Rixi smiled,
letting Kaoverth come within looking distance, before diving down, right
into the clouds.
Diving behind her, Kaoverth cursed. He had hoped it wouldn't come to this.
The silver of Rixioreth's tail was barely indistinguishable from the shaded
gatherings of mist. And he was chasing that tail, not her head, which he
might have spotted.
"Found me yet?" he heard her call.
He turned to where he'd heard her, but she was gone already. He could feel
her eyes on him as he plummeted further toward the sea. His four wings and
his instincts on altitude were all that kept him safe as the clouds flew
dangerously close above the water.
Rixorieth had circled around Kaoverth for a while and had for the moment
flown up front for a bit longer. Flying in the clouds, though it hid her,
was also hard for her. For the last fifteen minutes she thought she(d
spotted a blue and black form on more than one occasion, but it had always
turned out to be sky. So where was Kaoverth?
Behind her a splash sounded. Too big to be a fish, Rixioreth immediately
assumed the worst.
"Kaoverth!" she called.
Only to feel a wet claw grasp her tail from below.
"I knew you wouldn't be able to dodge me if I came
from the water." he purred,
"you never could."
"I always let you." she resisted.
"And now I caught you?" he asked.
"Nah... I let you." she resisted more.
"I still have you though."
