The Hatching
The evening was falling when
the Clutch at Darkling Dawn started hatching, merely hours after Nathaniel
and Daniel had gotten there.
"Won't we be behind on the others candidates?" Daniel asked concerned.
"They wouldn't accept us if they thought it would be a problem."
"I guess."
"Stop worrying. We got here, right?"
"And what part of this did we plan?"
"Ehm..." Nathaniel shrugged and smiled.
"You're not getting away with that today! I'm no girl"
As they entered the hatching grounds the sky darkened even more and it
startened to rain -pour is a better description. A cold wind followed them
in and both boys hurriedly pushed forward to the warm sands.
Daniel watched
amazed as the first eggs cracked open. A green, a blue, a brown and then
another green that impressed the brown. Two that bonded to each other and
again a whole bunch of blue, green and brown dragons that hatched. The eggs
of the two greens that were hatching were rapidly diminishing. And then an
egg burst in an unexpected corner. The third clutch was hatching too!
Daniel nearly cheared when his brother impressed the blue that came from
that surprise egg. He could barely contain the joy he felt for his brother.
As Nathaniel left two greens were searching out their bonds. Suddenly Daniel
realised their were only two eggs left. Two eggs, two candidates.
One of the eggs hatched quickly, almost in the blink of an eye and revealed
a green. A whisper of disbelief went through the crowd. There were no more
female candidates. For a moment Daniel doubted the green was heading his
way. Apparently that was even more unusual than two dragons bonding.
"You don't mind that I'm a girl, right?"
the green asked, with a determined look in her eye. How could Daniel refuse.
In fact, could he refuse? His mind was still pondering the decision his heart
had already made. With the expertise of every young dragon recently hatched,
the green added: "Good. Then let's go eat!"
Daniel, or Da'iel as he had given up his new name, still felt the need to
answer.
"Of course not Alearoth."
He didn't know if she heard it or not because she was well on her way to the
food tables and he had to run to catch up with her. At the tables his
brother was already waiting, not even a little surpised.
"You knew?"
"No, but Azeroth did. He gave me a reason too... what's this about you and
Draca?"
Da'iel tried to look innocent, but his blush gave him away.
"Nothing."
"Yeah right."
The soft pull of two dragons saved the conversation before it could end in
arguing.
"I want food! Now!"
"I'm hungry again too!"
Green Alearoth
Weyrlings
Alearoth yawned, blinked and rose from her bed of cold, comfortably smooth
rock. She'd been growing lately and just a week ago they'd gotten their own
living quarters in the stone walls of darkling dawn. Goodbye Baraks!
"Enjoying it much?" Da'iel, who'd woken up from all the mental chatter
asked.
"How could I not? Look at all the room."
Alearoth stretched her hindlegs and twitched her tail. She turned to lay on
her back, stretched her paws, unfolded her neck, and nearly took out Da'iel
with her tail, "It's wonderful."
"Well don't grow too much anymore, or we'll have to move again."
"I'll grow as big as I can get." she
smiled.
"Why not keep being small."
Alearoth grasped the meaning behind those words and asked with a grin:
"Scared that you'll have to embark on the 'wrong
path' when I fly now that your crush has found a life partner in one of her
own kind?"
"Shut up." Da'iel called, throwing his pillow toward his dragon.
"It's not a big deal you know. We'll just put in
the preferences: Tall, short-haired women who transform into dragons."
Another pillow flew toward Alearoth and this one, she could not miss.
Adults
"Ooh! I like him." Alearoth sighed.
"And that one can have my babies." She
sighed again dreamily.
"And I wouldn't ever mind giving him a go."
"Will you stop it?" Da'iel asked, "How am I supposed to get any work done
when you're getting into heat over every male dragon you see? We made a deal
remember. Only ones with female riders are allowed."
"Sour puss." Alearoth puffed.
"Ryuen might have been a nice catch."
she teased her rider, referring to his old flame, the dragon-shifter Draca
who'd searched him.
Da'iel chose to ignore her. Though it was hard. He had recovered since the
news about Draca's engagement had reached them. He'd even dated a couple of
the girls around darkling dawn, but the mention of her name still pained him
somewhat. She'd been his first monumental, soul-shattering love after all.
"Me being your second." Alearoth added.
"Whatever you say."
"I'll make sure you get a new love that's just as
wonderful."
