The Third Movement
Chapter 13: The Sea...
"Are we there yet?" Sezanee whined for the umpteenth time.
"Just a little further, it should be just around that bend in the
river." Jonayk replied.
"That’s what you said last time."
"River bends tend to take some time getting through." Jonayk
explained calmly.
"I would have gotten their much faster on my own."
"True as that may be, we wouldn’t have been able to follow you. I
asked you to speed up the currents wut you wouldn’t do that."
"Idiot, that would kill just about any fish living here. Most of them
can’t survive in salt water and that’s where they’d get with a
stronger current. So hush."
"You hush."
"How long are they going to be bickering?" Tokei sighed
questioningly in no particular direction. It seemed as if he was the only
one not enjoying the trip. Renoud and Wernyv were too busy playing their
guessing games, which truth be told, Tokei would have gladly joined if the
two didn’t flirt so openly. And the younger crowd, Ruben, Lahranne and
Mezanine, kept themselves occupied with catching fish, swimming and doing
all kinds of other stuff he wasn’t useful for in his current state.
However, being able to rest for three days had greatly improved his wound
and Tokei could feel that his body was mending. The wound had closed up
and though it still ached at times, there was no infection thanks to
Sezanee’s ointments, things that had oddly looked like fish-fat, but
Tokei hadn’t asked.
"When do you think we’ll reach the sea?" Lahranne asked,
"I’ve never been to it."
"Never?" Ruben asked.
"Neither have I." Mezanine shrugged, "We seldom left the
castle you know with Uncle and Mother trying to educate us. More like
child labour."
"Yeah, we were burried in books!" Lahranne laughed, "but we
did have fun."
Mezanine nodded, "And we did far more than studying alone."
"You’ve been to the sea, right, Ruben? Tell us about it."
"I usually joined one of my father’s ships when i didn’t have to
remain in the city to wait for Lady Illiane’s orders. There is nothing
more beautiful than standing on a ship and seeing nothing but water around
you, except, being in that position for a week and then for the first time
in days seeing land. It’s the best feeling of excitement and at the same
time coming home one can get. I feel like I have a small place for me
everywhere since all of my relatives live in different port towns. I
always had a place to go." Ruben’s face lit up with a melancholic
smile, "I haven’t been on a ship in two years though."
"I think I see the ocean!" Mezanine suddenly yelled.
She was standing at the bough of the vessle and started waving
frantically. The first seaguls flew overhead and noises of water rolling
into shore could be heard. Lahranne and Ruben rushed to the front and
immediately joined in the fun. It were the older men, and Sezanee who kept
a watchful eye out. Even if they had made it to the sea, they’d never
been as vulnerable as they were now. Jonayk’s little both couldn’t
carry them further and they’d be awfully exposed in the little harbour
towns. Spies were everywhere and Arrenji was astoundingly well-prepared.
Trying not to put a damper on the youths’ fun, Jonayk started to give
commands to keep them busy. His ship might not need a lot of crew, if need
arose, it could look like it did.
For a few moments the deck was bustling with activity. People ran up and
down, while Sezanee thoughtfully pulled a cloak over her remarkable
appearance. She knew that it would matter little if she did since they
wouldn’t make it to a port town, but no-one needed to worry yet. Worry
would only make them afraid and fright made it all the harder to act brave
and determined. With a sigh, the water nymph saw the wheels of time turn
and set in motion the events that she had foreseen.
