The Second Movement
Chapter 10:
Transportation
With one addition to their party, the castle escapees turned South again
the next morning and continued their journey. It was Wernyv who took the
lead as their guide this time since Ruben honestly admitted that he hadn’t
ventured to the South farther than the bridge. He did know that the forest
only got less accesable and that their already slow pace would be slowed
considerably even more.
"Don’t fret, I didn’t say we’d be walking, right?"
"How else are we going to get through here? We can’t go by horse
even if we were to find some in this god-forsaken place." Tokei
asked.
"You wouldn’t even be able to stay on a horse for more than aan
hour. No i’ve arranged better transportation. We’ll be going by
boat."
"Boat?"
"You don’t think all people stay away from the heart of the forest,
right? There are a few creeks here that are absolitely bustling with fish
and other seafood. One of them owes me a favour."
"You’d think favours were a kind of currency." Tokei jested.
"Here they might be." Wernyv grinned, "They’re by far
more valuable than coins."
For half aan hour they trudged on, keeping quiet most of the time and if
they spoke, they only whispered to the person next to them. The atmosphere
wasn’t particularly grim, but the many nights outside and constant
walking was slowly taking it’s toll.
"Jonayk?" Wernyv called and soon a head of bright red hair
appeared from behind a bunch of trees. "You called?"
"Are you ready old friend?"
"Now you call me friend, what happened to all those other names you
called me yesterday?"
"I needed passage. Can I help it that I just happened to see you
smuggle those bottles of brandy to the local gang?"
"You know my grandmother would kill me if I didn’t check on my
cousin every now and again. She’s very worried about him."
"I can imagine you being afraid of Imelda, but still, smuggling is
wrong."
"I seem to remember you closing aan eye now and again."
"Only when paid in favours." Wernyv grinned, "Are you ready
to bring us to the sea?"
"Huh, it’s 5 people, You said there’d only be 4."
"One more won’t hurt."
"I only asked passage for the six of us. Sezanee isn’t going to be
happy if I bring aan extra."
"Than bargain your way in."
"Just who is Sezanee?" Tokei demanded.
"Sezanee is Jonayk’s girlfriend and she runs this river."
"Girlfriend, as if." Jonayk sneered, "We just do business
at times."
"You’re the only human I know who is allowed to fish here. That
pretty much makes you her special someone."
"Yeah, yeah." Jonayk muttered and trailed of.
"Is Sezanee like the owner of the river?" Lahranne asked,
"I thought all tolls had to be reported to the court to get
approved."
"All human tolls, you just don’t mess with Water Nymphs."
"Those exist?"
"You’d be surprised what else lives down here. But Sezanee is
alright as far as water nymphs go. She might seem a bit cold at first, but
she genuinly likes Jonayk even if he might deny it."
Jonayk popped back up, followed by a blue-green creature vaguely
resembling a woman with scales covering her body, sparkling where drops of
water still lingered on them. Fins line her ears and back.
"Who is the extra?" She asked.
"That would be this charming fellow here." Wernyv said pointing
at Renoud, "He’s a complete mystery, even for me."
The water nymph giggles softly, sounding like water running over rocks
before she nodded and said: "I’ll allow it for once, but I’m
coming with."
"Why?" Jonayk asked.
"I cannot tell anyone about the future I see, I just have to come
with. Don’t argue."
Jonayk shrugged and loaded the group into his boat. He was burning with
curiosity about what Sezanee had seen in the future that made it necessary
for her to tag along, but he knew from experience that she wouldn’t tell
until the time had passed. It was an annoying habit, but one that was
attractive at the same time.
