The Second Movement
Chapter 9: A Plan Forms
Sitting around the fire, the tale of Renoud’s fall and rescue were told
over and over again. Both lahranne and Mezanine had been scared to death
that they would lose the interior decorater, while Ruben was more taken by
Wernyv’s daring rescue. Tokei, on the other hand seemed to remain more
reserved, taking the time to judge the forester on his own. Renoud thought
his actions were the most safe and reliable, but he couldn’t help being
completely overturned by Wernyv’s charming behaviour.
"So just who are you?"
"Just some travellers." Tokei tried, "who ran into some bad
luck when our horses got stolen by a bunch of bandits who stabbed me in
the process."
"I can tell it’s something more than that." Wernyv replied,
"Who would cut a rope bridge for innocent travellers who’ve already
been robbed? I know that those kind of robbers end up starved to death
soon enough. No, by your behaviour and route, I’d say you escaped the
castle on the day it was usurped."
"Why do you say that?" Ruben asked, a bit too soon and startled.
"First your clothes, they’re not really the things one wears if one
goes travelling, except maybe your clothes, boy." Wernyv said,
"Aside from that, I know people who pass through here and most of
them look around to ward of the spirits when all you do is look backwards.
I say you’re running."
"Let’s give up." Lahranne decided, "It’s pretty clear
he knows who we are."
"I don’t know who everyone is." Wernyv shrugged. "I’m
sure one of you is princess Lahranne. I’d say it’s you since I heard
once she is a cute blond. With that, i know that the feisty redhead here
is most likely your adoptive sister since you two are always together
according to the rumours. The wounded fellow is most likely a castle guard
and the boy is not a local by birth though he knows the surroundings.
Maybe one of the merchant folk who’re relative to the queen."
"I’m not a castle guard." Tokei sighed, "Do I really look
like one?"
"And who am I?" Renoud wanted to know.
"You’re just full of surprises. Too practical to be a clerk or
scholar, too clumsey to be a guard and too noticeable to be any kind of
spy or advisor."
"I don’t know if these are to be taken as compliments or
insults."
"So you’re not a noble, one of those would have taken them as
insults for sure."
"True, true. I think I’ll let you guess a couple of times
more."
"Not sure if I should break this up." Ruben hesitantly
intervened, "But our route to the West has been cut off. We need to
make a new plan."
"Easy enough," Wernyv said, staring into Renoud’s eyes trying
to read the truth from them, "You continue South until you reach the
sea. There you’ll find a ship to take you wherever it is you want to go.
Even if you go back North, i’m sure they’ll have someone waiting for
you there. West isn’t aan option and East only leads back to the
civilised world and the spies of the enemy."
"Just how do you know all this?" Tokei asked, "You claim to
be just a forester but clearly you know too much."
"Do I?" Wernyv looked surprised, "Well, i just happened to
meet a woman passing through here a day or two ago who warned me that her
friends might need my help. Thing is, I owed that woman a favour so I
camped here. You might just be those friends."
"Was it my mother?" Lahranne asked, "Did she pass through
here unharmed?"
"It takes more than a conspiracy to hurt lady Illiane."
"Just why did you owe her a favour?" Wernyv asked.
"Guess." Wernyv smiled, "The one who gets the answer first
wins."
"What are we playing for?"
"The winner decides."
