The Second Movement
Chapter 11: Unseen Eyes
of Revenge
Thekardien ran, but he didn’t run far. He had been caught before, though
mostly it had been bandits who tried to steal his earnings and not
odd-looking strangers that actually looked as if they might take him
prisoner. As long as he could remember, and that was at least the ten
years that he had lived in this forest, first with his mother and later
alone, had anyone try to stop him raiding the dead. After all, they didn’t
need their worldy possesions anymore. But now, it seemed as if those
people had thought he had killed that man. If he got caught he would be
put in jail and tortured. He would be locked up, his freedom taken away
and hurt beyong imagination. The words rambled on in his mind. Like a
scared animal, he continued to run and finally reached the bridge that
joined both halves of the forest.
Staying hidden in the shade of the shrubs, Thekardien saw a man, clothed
in grey, doing something suspicious to the ropes of the bridge on the
other side. Seeing aan opportunity, Thekardien ran over and tapped on the
man’s shoulder.
Barune who had seen the youth approach didn’t try to act as if he was
surprised. He felt a wicked innocence coming from the boy, like aan animal
not knowing right from wrong. Life sometimes created these individuals and
they usually weren’t dangerous.
"What are you doing mister?" The boy asked.
"I’m setting a trap." Barune said.
"Is it for the people on the other side of the river?"
"Have you seen them? Where are they?"
"Half a day walk from here. They don’t go fast because one of them
is hurt. I saw it good when I hid from them."
"Did they see you?"
The boy looked troubled, "One of them caught me. I hate that
one."
"Which one was it?"
"He had very weird hair. He didn’t look like someone you can
trust."
"I know him." Barune said, "His name is Renoud. I didn’t
know he’d be in on this."
"Is he bad?"
"He is someone we need to watch out for." Barune answered,
"It was bad enough with Tokei, even if he was out of practice and
injured. And I still don’t know enough about that Ruben kid. The queen
probably knew I’d be careful with him around."
"What is a queen?"
"A person we’re trying to catch." Barune answered, "My
work here is done. Come with me, I’ll give you food and a place to stay.
If you tell me everything you know, I’ll take care of you and give you
work."
