The Fourth Movement
Chapter 17: Disturbed
Ritual
"Tell us again just what it is your planning." Tokei demanded
from Sophia.
"Easy, we, by using aan ancient ritual, call upon the powers of the
gods to aid us in finding allies to help us with our quest, which is
getting princess Lahranne and her mother back in charge of the
country."
"But isn’t it absurd, why would the gods help us?"
"Because we’re the side of good of course." Sophia said.
"It isn’t that black and white." Renoud added, playing the
devil’s advocate, "I mean, right and wrong are just determined by
the side you’re on, right?"
"Now and again, it is easy to tell right from wrong even if you’re
sided already. Little good will come from a reign by lord Arrenji who will
milk the country dry and then leave with the riches while the previous
reign was one of prosperity and peace for the people."
"Yeah, we know, but still, will the gods see it that way."
"The gods aren’t as distant as you think." Sezanee said,
"The ritual will work and we will find help."
"What kind of help?" Wernyv asked, "I doubt gods command
human armies."
"The kind of help we will find on a distant world. I’ve never seen
the ritual performed but I’ve heard stories from the older sisters when
I was still a rookie oracle and it is powerful. It works by creating a
kind of portal to a similar world that will have the answer to our
needs."
"Just like that?" Tokei tried.
"It’s not without danger, but not when done by someone skilled like
me with the help of a nymph who has seen it being performed. Trust us you
silly jester, you’re supposed to see the lighter side of life."
"Recently someone seems to have turned of the light switch."
"Very funny." Sophia remarked, pulling up her nose; "Just
you wait and see."
With that the oracle started preparing for the ritual. It would start at
sundown, opening a gate about aan hour later. It wasn’t as easy as she
had made it seem and there was some danger involved, namely a possibility
that they might not find a way to return, but her faith in the gods was
strong. Besides, it was her only chance to get way from her old life and
finally find some company.
Night approached and none of the escapees noticed
the contours of a small vessle appearing at the horizon. Soon, with the
aid of a skilled captain, the ship vanished against the rocky shoreline
cliffs, becoming invisible in the darkness. Anchored, two boats slipped
toward the shore, making only the smallest of sounds when they hit the
sandy bottom. Five people stepped out and approached the house of the
oracle...
"You hold this." Sophia said, putting a
flower-crown on Tokei’s head.
"As if I’d wear this!" He yelled.
"It’s either this, or sprinkling the metal dust every time you hear
me ring this bell."
Tokei readjusted the flower crown, but did so with obvious signs of
disgust and passive resistance. Sophia let him, starting a fight now would
be disastrous. They were entering the final stage of the ritual and time
was fleeting.
Chanting incantations a soft swirling vortex opened before them, something
that made even the disbeliever Tokei trust Sophia when she said, "Now
we go through."
It was, Sezanee, who entered last and who would close of the gate who
heard the door open and saw their five enemies enter. Though she had never
seen them, she knew full well who they were. Shetried to lunge for the
vortex, but was held back for a moment. It took a violent struggle to
break free and hop through it, but she made it.
"Close." She called, but knew that with the small delay, the
enemies would follow them. She could only hope that they would be lost in
the vortex and end up somewhere completely different from them.
