The First Movement

Chapter 5: Failed Usurper
"Report." Lord Arrenji bellowed.
The tall, dark-skinned, black-haired imposing man, clothed in the finest weaves was not very pleased with his helpers right now. Only two of the three were present, and even though Arrenji couldn’t stand the third that one at least got the job done when asked.
"We were able to capture the king in his study, my Lord, but Queen Illiane escaped unseen into the city and is rumoured to have not rested there. She was seen taking a horse out of a stable and riding off to the South, most likely to find help with the people and her kinsmen." His first lieutenant, Kuruma reported. The man was of medium built and rather handsome in the eyes of women, though not as dashing as Lord Arrenji himself.
"We haven’t found a single trace of the princess and we assume that she was warned and fled the castle. We’re yet trying to find out her escape route." His first tactician and field officer, Sekai, a striking woman with dark aubern hair that seemed to glow like dieing embers in the right light and dark eyes that seemed to have lost all light.
"Are you always this incompetent?" Arrenji demanded, "These tasks were simple, find the queen, find the princess and capture them. Don’t tell me half a squadron of my loyal men got outsmarted by a couple of women who do nothing else but laze around in the court!"
"By all means, they are far brighter than that, my Lord." A fourth person joined the conversation. The man was tall, with an almost grey complexion and greying blond hair that made him look even more pale and sickly.
"Barune." Arrenji called his second tactician and field officer, "Where the hell have you been?"
"Unlike my two companions I was scouting the outside castle and that’s how I know that the princess and her minions have left the castle."
"What?" Arrenji exclaimed, "You fools let her escape. And you! Why didn’t you interfere?"
"It was one against five, my lord, besides I heard their plans, they’re intending to cross the forest."
Arrenji’s face cleared immediately. "Yes, they’ll have a hard time there. We can make good come out of this. But we have to play the cards right."
"Tacticians!" Sekai and Barune stirred, "I expect your plans to be ready by tonight when we shall meet over diner. It would be such a waste to let a good banquet get cancelled."
Being given their orders, the three henchmen left and allowed Lord Arrenji to savour his small winnings alone. True enough not all had worked out as planned, but really, the palace was his, the women were running, the king was caught and soon the land would forget the good times of Unsen and enter a complete dominion of Arrenji...

Barune quickly went his own way once he had left Arrenji’s quarters. He was a loner, aan einzelganger who did not care for human company. People thought of him as cold and calculated, things he was. But aside from that, Barune had a keen mind and aan eye for the truth in gossip. He knew for instance about the relationship between Sekai and Kuruma, a small jewel he kept hidden for himself. Let people think he was in it for the intruige and adventure, like Sekai was in it for the money and Kuruma had high ambitions to gain power. Let all of them think as they pleased.

With Barune gone, Sekai and Kuruma hastily made their way for their rooms. Though Sekai was in effect the tactician of the two, none of the plans she made were entirely her own since she had started this relationship. The two of them knew that together they’d overthrow Arrenji when his part in this charade had been played.
"Let’s discuss or plans." Sekai whispered.
"First, let’s enjoy ourselves... I have a feeling we might get seperated for a while."
