The First Movement
Chapter 4: Fated Meeting
at the Castle Gates
"Which way is the city?" Lahranne asked, "I have no clue
where we are right now."
"It’s due East, but it might be better to not approach it so
openly." Renoud answered, "Prying eyes would find us too
easily." Having just said that, the soft coughing of a person asking
their attention reached them.
"Excuse me. Are you the princesses?"
"Who are you?" Tokei asked, wishing he’d have a sword.
"A friend." The young man replied. When he stepped into the
light, they saw that he was of medium build, neither short like Tokei or
tall like Renoud, with soft chestnut brown hair and two deep brown eyes.
He had a friendly face and large hands that seemed to be used to working
with either metal or wood, rough, but very skilled. Everything about him
seemed to convey that very same message.
"Ruben!" Lahranna excalimed, "It’s been so long."
Before going off into a meaningless discussion about where he had been,
how he had been and why he had come back now etc etc, Lahranna stopped
herself and wondered. Just who was this boy.
"It’s kind of strange to meet you here, Ruben." Mezanine said
carefully.
"Yeah, well Cousin Illiane wouldn’t let me come close to you
anymore after you fell from that tree." The youngster smiled
sheepishly, "She got the strange idea that i had had something to do
with it."
"Cousin?" Renoud asked.
"My mother and her mother were nieces, though I almost never saw her
since she married King Unsen. We did visit once and then I met you two
when I was playing in the courtyard, far away from the tree, minding my
own business."
"Did you see my mother?" Lahranne asked, afraid to hear the
answer.
"Aiye, she contacted us yesterday evening when she first started
having suspicions about lord Arrenji. She wasn’t certain, but wanted me
to keep aan eye on the castle walls to see if anything out of the ordinary
was going on."
"Was there?"
"You’re the first persons I notice. It was an inside job I
reckon."
Ruben kept silent for a moment. He had wished his reunion with the
princess to be a more joyous occasion, being introduced formally by his
cousin and being able to talk about everyhting with the young girl he only
remembered crying the most beautiful tears about 10 years ago.
"Ruben, we need to get to the village." Tokei said.
"No." Ruben answered, "Cousin Illiane told me that if
something were to happen I’d have to get you safe to our family so she
wouldn’t have to worry about you. They’d be able to hide us from the
enemy and get in touch with Illiane without much trouble."
"And how do you suppose we get to them?"
"We cut straight through the forest and meet up with them at the
other side." There was not a speck of doubt in Ruben’s eyes when he
conveyed that message. It was simply something that he was told to do and
he would do it even if it killed him...
