The First Movement
Chapter 6: A Search Set
in Motion
Lord Arrenji quietly waite din his quarters for his henchmen to come back.
Of course he knew they each might prove dangerous. He knew that Sekai and
kuruma were planning to get rid of him. He knew that Barune knew and didn’t
seem to feel the need to interfere. After all, when one goes on the road
of evil the golden rule is ‘all men fend for himself and himself alone.’.
Arrenji wasn’t spiteful, as long as he could keep his knowledge hidden,
he was certain that his underlings would go out of their way to win his
trust. Except for Barune, the man remained a mystery. He had him spied by
many skillful eyes, but none of them had been able to follow him and
Arrenji knew that his spies had been caught in the act by the stern, cold
figure that remained a mystery. Still, mysteries intruiged this lord so he
still kept the unpredictable Barune close. Soon maybe he’d get to the
bottom of the man’s motivation.
A knock on the door sounded and Arrenji ordered his tacticians and
lieutenant in. Kuruma and Sekai were as usually richly dressed, while
Barune kept his usual drab atire. Arrenji was sure that the man had
absolutely nothing else hanging in his closet than slightly worn grey and
black clothes.
"Anyone keen to start?"
As usual, Sekai came out with the first set of plans. Though not bad, the
plan was full of loopholes through which the two of them could find
personal gain and make Arrenji’s position that much harder to maintain.
They didn’t even seem to be hiding their intention anymore.
When Lord Arrenji looked at Barune he noticed that the man knew he knew.
This game of intricate chess seemed to get more interesting with every
minute. What were Barune’s intentions? Did he wonder about Arrenji as
well, or was he aan open book?
"Your plan Barune?"
"I suggest we cut the road to the West off on the only point it’s
feasable. This bridge is old and failing already. In normal conditions the
passage is risky, if the ropes are cut, no-one will be able to venture to
the other side of the river for miles in either direction. Aside from
that, the terrain there is well-suited for hiding and the passage is
narrow. One or two persons can defeat them there and cappture the
princess."
"Intruigin plan, Barune." Arrenji said, taking the time to think
it over, "I think I will follow it."
In his mind however, Arrenji knew that he would give the other two the
opportunity to guard the rear in case the runaways smelled a trap and ran
back. So guarded from both sides, changes of failure got slim.
Taking a drink from his glass of wine, Arrenji didn’t feel the least bit
smart and in control though. Barune was making a move now and it would be
Arrenji’s time to counter and lay a trap of his own.
"I think we’ve worried enough, let us eat and drink and then head
out tomorrow to set the trap."
