Blue-Grey
Guianeth and Puddle Drizs
Drizs dutifully brought his mate seaweed, algae and small
oceanic critters for breakfast while she guarded their clutch. Nekrats usually
shared this duty in the community but maybe because Guianeth wasn't a nekrat and
her Pernese heritage shone through, she'd opted to guard her eggs all the time.
She only trusted Drizs to come close. Luckily her lovely mate didn't complain
and listened to her every whim. Aided by both their bonds who remained mostly
land-bound for obvious reasons she was actually feeling quite content. Guianeth
was just thinking she wouldn't mind spending a few more weeks here when she
noticed the sudden change in her eggs. Small ripples and bubbles perturbed the
waters. All signs her babies were trying to escape.
Elated, Guianeth started a high-pitched hum. Drizs arrived within seconds and
added his lower-pitched voice to the song and all over the island dragons picked
up the chant. Below the surface, nekrats did the same and all who were close
knew what was to happen. Diraye and Finn came running and behind them candidates
and spectators followed from all possible directions. From below the water came
Talyah, a sii-Linyaari or mermaid from Xanadu, closely followed by Vashal, a
Kynnese Dahkala and Ripple Sonoma, a sentient dolphin with cybernetic
exoskeleton. Vaitiare, a sunset-coloured mer-rukel was right behind them. A bit
slower came the Weft Ostren Veldam who chose to not tire himself out before the
actual hatching because he knew that it would still take time before hatchlings
actually appeared. Jumping above the waves, Sumisu returned from the other side
of the island where he'd been visiting his friends Endil and Merey who'd
impressed dragons. Wading out into the water from the beach were Kaladri, the
Dawn Cove writer, Munfou the dark werybrat from Pern and Herberto, the student
and pirate from the world of Dishonored. Last, but certainly not least,
Trikimatureth circled above the bay, triple blue wingsails melding with the sky
as the Danachian dragon waited for their bond to appear.
As Ostren had predicted, it took another
half an hour before the first egg actually hatched. The amoeboid shifter was in
human form when small fountains announced actual hatchings. No-one knew how many
eggs had actually been laid or what colours and features the offspring would
have, but they were about to find out. A dark form sped just below the surface
and skidded to a stop right in front of Ostren. A black head with brown fins and
bright yellow eyes broke the surface and poked the retired military man. The sea
dragon knew tired when they saw it and felt it was their duty to help.
"You're in shape. I dig that." the
black-brown hatchling remarked. He nodded once more and said: "I'll
go with you to guard your ocean. My name is Ugiskth."
Other forms were moving through the water. Below the surface Vaitare
noticed a sleek white-teal shape and she immediately went after it. Curious and
naive she just wanted to see the hatchling. The foam-coloured hatchling enjoyed
the chase and led the merrukel away before looking her in the eyes.
"Mind if we play a bit more before we head
back?" she asked, "My name is
Oskath."
"Tag, you're it!" the rukel shouted and sped away, leaving the
hatchling to follow her.
Closer to the shore Kaladri found herself
besieged by a black, dark-blue finned sea dragon. The hatchling seemed a bit
shy, but finally snuggled close to the young writer and silently whispered his
name in the woman's mind.
"Guirdith."
Two hatchlings had managed to get tangled up, trying to evade their siblings as
they hatched. Both were grey but one had vivid green fins while the other had
bronzish-beige fins. Two candidates sped forward to help untangle them. Talyah
reached them first, the cheerful energetic merwoman now slightly worried the
hatchlings might get hurt. She grabbed hold of a green fin and slowly tugged
while Munfou, the Pernese weyrbrat eased the
bronzish hatchling out of the way. Though they hadn't officially been
introduced, both had the uncanny feeling that they might know each other. It was
more a feeling than a memory and neither had asked the other about it. But both
smiled as they worked silently together.
"I was worried there for a while, Talyah."
the swamp-green female huffed.
"As long as you're not hurt." Talyah replied, "Cerudith."
A few feet away Munfou was checking out the hatchling in his arms.
"You don't need to fuss." the
little puddle male boasted, "I knew you were coming
to help me so I wasn't afraid."
In the sky above, Trikimatureth finally
spotted a form they liked. Someone playful who would probably be into building a
few sand castles (or a whole sand city maybe). The blue Danachian dragon
followed the hatchling effortlessly and dived down, imagining their wings as
great sails that carried them forward. They dove and caused quite a splash right
next to the waiting hatchling.
"I thought you'd never come down!"
"I was on the look out for Pirates, Tintenth."
Trikimatureth said, "Are you sayiong you want to
join my band?"
"Reporting for duty, Sir!"
Three waterdwellers found themselves surrounded by a trio of agile sea dragons
next. Sumisu, Vashal and Ripple Sonoma waited, their scales raised to pick up
even the smallest of shifts in currents. It wasn't helping that a wind had
picked up and clouds were gathering. The bay weather notoriously temperamentful.
As drops started to fall down, the water dwellers were unperturbed. Their eyes
were on the hatchlings in their vicinity. Two vivid white-bodied sea dragons,
one with vibrant blue and one with bright red fins, and a black-bodied deep
green-finned hatchling circled ever closer. The red fountain hatchling leapt out
of the water just after Sumisu made his
move. They seemed to be on crash course, but at the last moment, each made an
elaborate move that seemed choreographed bt clearly couldn't have been. As
flying fish person and dolphin hybrid dove back under the water, a bond had been
made.
"Splendidly done, Yuusenth." Sumisu praised.
"Your thoughts were easy to follow."
the fountain sent back, "Almost as juicy as that
story about...."
"I was told not to share that." the postman interrupted, "So only
talk about that one in private."
In a whirl of black and white, Vashal
suddenly found himself looking into the eyes of a seaweed-green female
dragoness.
"Antiquariath." she introduced
herself, "And I want to see your
collections."
That left the dolphin Ripple Sonoma to
follow the last remaining hatchling of the group. The young male sped away to
open sea but was quickly caught by the dolphin.
"You've got some growing to do." Ripple whistled and though the
exoskeleton translated, the dragon really didn't need it.
"I'll have you to teach me." he
said, "Call me Lachth and treat me well."
Above the surface, the weather had deteriorated further and a lot of the
spectators returned to the shelter of the mountains. Herberto
Silvestre though knew there were still hatchlings in the water. He
felt that he would throw out all the stops and dove into the water, shifting
into his dolphin form would have to wait. He could only hold it for 2 minutes so
he needed to make it count. His strong limbs and longs propelled him through the
water. A white flash caught his attention and he watched as a black and white
hatchling jumped out of the water like a little lightning bolt.
"Wait!" Herberto called and he shifted, giving everything he had to
follow the stormy dragon.
The hatchling turned and flashed a toothy grin, "Catch me if you
can!"
The weather calmed as the storm dolphin-nekrat moved away with his bond and
yellow rays broke through the cloud cover. All candidates had bonded, but a
single light-coloured hatchling remained. the white-yellow female seemed not
perturbed.
"Do you want to come home with me?"
Guianeth asked her daughter.
"No, I'm going home with her."
Maegolth said and pointed a flipper toward Diraye.
"She is already bonded though, to me."
Drizs told his daughter.
"Not her, but the little one inside her."
Maegolth said as if her parents were short a few.
"I only found out a week ago." Diraye confessed, "I was waiting
to be sure."
"I guess now you are." Finn shrugged and hugged his partner.

Additional Information:
This template has been dubbed "Dolkrat". Dragons hatched at this
clutch are half Nekrat, quarter KSG Dolphin dragon and quarter Pernese dragon.
Their body colour comes from their mother's dolphin genes and is either
white, grey or black. The fins are more colourful due to their nekrat and
Pernese heritage and somehow they match up well. The nekrat colours are
predominantly blue and green, Pernese clutches feature a lot of blue and green
dragons while the browns and yellows are less common. Due to their Nekrat
heritage, these colours do not display rank and their personalities match up to
their nekrat colours (listed between parenthesis). Due to their nekrat heritage,
stranger colours might pop up when breeding (purples, oranges, reds) but they'll
be rare.
Sizewise they're expected to have normal nekrat proportions (anywhere
from dolphin to whale-sized) but are more likely to grow to the larger side of
that spectrum.
As for abilities, these dragons are amphibious. They are most agile in
the water but they can survive and move on land. They use telepathy to convey
messages and can teleport to other vessels of water. For this they need
directions or a clear image of where they need to go. Some of these may display
telekinesis though this particular ability might be overlooked (it would enable
them to fly for instance ;-) )
