Hatching 22
Annick and Kinar waited until Darainth gave the go ahead to call the
candidates. It was a bit early still, but Darainth, with her ever-present
know-it-all attitude insisted they gave the summons. Half an hour later the
candidates filed in and saw that none of the eggs were even rocking yet. Relaxed
and a bit worried about how long they'd have to wait, the crowd mingled. Thola
and Teket, two orphans that had come from Dragonhope were talking to the Pernese
holder Sheridan from Big Bay Hold. They were soon joined by the two Meowth
shifters Reva and Ammon Felinus. Talk shifted to business, leaving Ammon and
Teket to be left out and start a conversation on their own about gam(bl)ing. A
short ways off Asagi, a water mage from Khleur was chatting with the Kynnese
party of shifters. Xenze, canine ears and tail lifted in an attentive position
was eating some sandwhiches politely replied to Asagi's questions about Kynn
places. Kanon and Garnet had asked the water mage a lot of questions about
Khleur so Xenze felt like they should answer some of hers as well. To the side,
the last candidate, a runic warrior by the name of Jerick, kept to himself. He
was the gloomy sort and though some had tried, no-one had gotten the
dagger-wielding man to open up.
Half an hour again had passed when finally someone noticed a tremor emanating
from the eggs. As the day passed into evening the dragons took up the chant to
encourage the hatchlings to break free. All conversation ceased and the
attention shifted to the eggs. The first to hatch was a bright green male that
was very eager to bond. Nearly tripping over his own tail and limbs, the dragon
more rolled than walked toward Ammon and hastily touched his nose to the boy's
hand.
"We were meant to be." the dragon
said, "My name is Softh."
Spurned on by the first, the eggs started to quake with more vigour. Two
adjacent eggs shattered with the added tremors and out fell two dragons.
Both were blue but one was the clear blue of gletsjer water while the other
was the deep blue of a starry sky. The darker blue Lapis Lazuli got to his feet
first and ran razor-straight to Asagi.
"I want to see this world of yours."
the dragon said, "My name is Lauwdanomriforith,
but you can call me Lauw."
Snorting at her brother's joke, the aquamarine hatchling made her way calmly
toward Xenze whose wrist she took with her tail to indicate she'd chosen.
"And I'm Hounui." she said, "My
fire burns cold but it's yours."
The next egg to hatch was one that had been somewhat different from the other
eggs. It had been darker in colour and slightly bigger than the others. Darainth
hadn't commented on it and had just insisted that it was hers. Still, a lot of
people had wondered what colour would hatch from this one and some of the
candidates had had a gamble going. So it was no wonder that people gasped as a
ruby red female fell from her egg. The hatchling roared in laughter as she
strode toward Thola.
"How much did we win?" the
hatchling asked.
"Quite a lot." the girl grinned back, "Thanks for your help
Agneth."
Reva, one of the losing parties would have objected if it weren't for the fact
that she had also just found her bond. The turquoise green-blue female hatchling
had snuck up on the young woman and was gazing deep in her eyes.
"I like your style." she said, "Waress
is my name."
A brown Tiger's Eye and a green Emerald had hatched with the Turquoise and both
males were now making their way across the sands to their intended bonds.
"Jerick, I'm yours to complete you."
the emerald male said, "My name is Yinas."
Hearing the familiar sounds of his deceased wife's name in the name the
hatchling had chosen for itself, a part of the void in his heart filled up, but
there was plenty of work left to be done.
"Sh'dan?" the Tiger's Eye tried as
he got his bond's attention.
"Boforth?" the Pernese holder asked right back as he found the unusual
name in his mind.
"That's me." the young dragon
answered.
The last egg rocked, rocked again and finally toppled over to break on impact. A
dark shadowy blue male dragon fell out. It waited a bit to get it's bearings but
then hopped to his feet and made his way to the remaining three candidates. Two
of them he'd have to disappoint but there was no remedying that. There was only
one that matched his temperament after all.
"T'ket, it's you I want." the
dragon made his choice known.
"Erath." T'ket whispered back.
Darainth and Troponith launched the triumphant cry of a successful hatching and
all present cheered for the new pairs that had been formed.
