Hatching 5
White-Winged
Green Kyrenath and Blue Aseth and Bronze Ithtyruith
Laedrys Trix watched as she saw the candidates enter
the sands. Oddly all worthy that had been found were girls this time. Of
course the mother of the clutch, Kyrenath might have had a say in that.
Like her rider she stayed well away from long-lasting relationships, only
finding pleasure in the occasional fling now and again.
The two fathers of the clutch were waiting patiently at the edge of the
hatching sands. They had been fetching food for the pregnant/guarding
dragoness and were now dismissed of their duties. Kyrenath had announced
her eggs were moving.
Trix could feel the expectation as electricity in the air. She had at
times tried to count the eggs, but Kyrenath had kept them close to her,
burying several for days. She had counted as many as 15 and as little as
6.
Trix shifted her attention to the candidates. The 8 girls stood in a
oblong form around the mother and her eggs, smiling at each other and
crossing fingers. Trix let her eyes pass each one, the eggs seemed to be
in no hurry to hatch.
Pechance, a ropedancer from a far away place , had been the first to sign
her name on the form. She had been here for Hydrath's clutch
intentionally. She stood confident, legs slightly apart and her hands
rested on her thighs.
Next to Pechance stood Kehss and Mihve. They were both part feline, though
completely different at that. Mihve was a shapeshifter with an almost
unbelievable ability to change. Above that she was a telepath too. Kehss
was more of a down-to-earth cat-woman with a love for boats and the sea.
She had often sailed down the small canal between Tri-Peak Isle and the
main land of Syl'Neriss.
A little further the Pernese thief Satordi stood in the orange-yellow
light of the evening lanterns. Her dark tanned skin drawing the light
toward her. Trix wondered why dragons seemed to enjoy to save the sinners.
Satordi wouldn't be the first to impress.
Further, almost at the back of the cavern stood Draca in the shadows. Trix
smiled. She still didn't like to come into the light, even now the frantic
changing of her tattoo had been reduced to a small wavering of the lines. It was still a mystery to her what could have caused such a violent
reaction to the Isle. But then Trix had never seen a changing tattoo on
anyone before.
Away from the shadows, also in the light of the lanterns stood Myrcka, a
girl who Sovyl had found wandering around in the high north of a
previously uncharted world. Trix got chills when she saw the girl, tall,
blond and blue-eyed in a mere cotton dress so close to autumn. Maybe the
pleasant warmth of Tri-Peak was getting to her after all.
Only a few metres apart stood Angeli. She was busy untangling her
firelizard and her Ceadra. She had just appeared at Lantessama one day
early in the morning. No-one knew how she had gotten here, but she had
made clear she wanted a dragon as soon as she had seen them around the
Isle.
And last but not least, Trix stopped for a moment at Menygma. The girl
stood patiently, watching the eggs like her eyes could somehow make them
hatch faster.
Trix turned to the opening of the cavern, the dark night sky on the
outside full of stars. Cyan appeared and waved when she saw her sister.
"I got the message." she said.
"Good, what do you think of all the girls?" Trix asked.
"I love it!" Cyan said, "Girl Power!"
giggling as she made the silly gesture that went with the shout.
"And what does Lucas think about that?" Trix asked and winked.
"He doesn't mind it... without me he wouldn't have his holiday cavern
to play around in." Cyan said grinning malicious.
A sigh went through the audience and both the Laedrysses eyes whirled to
the eggs. Kyrenath had moved a bit to the back, revealing an egg that was
clearly rocking. The candidates took a step closer and watched.
A soft crack echoed through the cavern, but the egg did not yet hatch. In
stead one of the others, a small egg with red splotches jumped up and
exploded a few inches above the ground. When the pieces of eggshell had
rained down a soft orange form appeared. The dragoness -for what else
could the first have been than female in this clutch- rose to her haunches
and allowed the public in the stands a view of her beautifully
snow-crystal patterned self. She was a flame after all. But not just any
flame, a duotoned flame with wings like a rayant's.
"Pechance," she said as she
approached the young woman slowly, "Shall we
bond and blend our colours? My name is Valiance and I would be honoured to
do so."
Going along with the rather formal way of speaking, Pechance
answered:
"Why, that would be most to my
liking."
She then smiled and bend down to caress her new friend behind the
eyeridges.
"Don't stop..." Valiance
begged when Pechance lifted her fingers, eyes whirling a blue almost
purple from delight.
"But you are hungry, I can feel it."
Pechance said.
"Oh... ok, I guess I am."
Valiance said, "I was lucky to find one so
considerate." she continued and bowed to the crowd
watching the hatching before she followed her bond out.
The next egg to hatch came from the other small mound of eggs. The one
Kyrenath said were Aseth's eggs. This dragonet had fallen out, almost
unnoticed. But she couldn't remain unnoticed long since the tone of her
skin was a black marbled with blue, no colours that fit in the background
of the hatching cavern. The dragoness sat down and let her dark blue wings
catch the light, sending it back in a wave of water.
"Mihve." she said, choosing
the least likely of the two felines that had been watching her.
"My
name is Izrell."
When the dragoness moved into the light she too displayed some snow
markings, but not as obvious as the ones on Valiance. They were more
subtle and blue, almost like icewater.
The reply of Mihve was muffled by the crash of two more eggs. One from
each pile of eggs. Two dragons, a male and a female emerged. Both of them
looked alike, whirling with colours. Only after close examinations it
became obvious that the female was a sunset with Spectral wings and the
male a Spectral with Sunset wings. Both were heavily patterned with the
snowy sheen of their mother. As of one mind they ignored the candidates
and turned toward each other.
"Arayath."
the male spoke first,
"Will
you go away
with me?"
"I'd love
to Naryen."
said the female, "But where
will we
go?"
"Does
it matter
when we are
together?"
The female sunset pondered, frightened to make her first walk in the world
a solitary one.
"You're not
alone! I'll watch
out for
you." the spectral said.
Arayath smiled and let herself be led out by her bond and half brother.
Everything would turn out right. It had always done for her colourful and
optimistic kind.
After these two dragons had left Trix made a note of them in her records.
The first sponsored dragons at Lantessama. She'd need to find a home for
them, someone to take care for them. But soon these thoughts left her mind
as yet another pair of eggs broke. A rather strange looking silver
with creamy wings, horned and large patterns on his soft skin arose and
beside him a small spectral winged rain, the most heavily patterned one of
the bunch so far.
To Trix's relief they only glanced at each other before they made there
way to the remaining candidates. The moon strolled to the feline sailor
Kehss while the rain darted to the former thief.
"Kehss, my name is Demicth. We will find
your people together if you'll have me.." the dawn-moon
said silently, almost a whisper against the enthusiast shouting of the
rain, but what it lacked in strength it made up for in passion. This
strange dragon of night and sadness couldn't deny the hope it's wings
already hoped, but he remained careful, waiting for the reply of his
chosen one. Ready for rejection.
"We will Demicth, sooner or later."
Kehhs said smiling through rather moist eyes... or was it the light making
them shine? Trix wasn't sure.
Meanwhile, the Spectral-Rain was still shouting at Satordi. She had
blabbed out so much information not even her bond could follow what she
was saying.
"Dieveggeth, calm down." she tried.
When speaking to her didn't have any effect, Satordi kneeled beside her
and grabbed the dragon's head, holding it right in front of her, looking
into the expressive eyes. She thought of silence with all of her being,
wanting to be back on Pern away from the noise.
"Don't you want me?" the
voice inside her head finally asked and grew silent.
"Of course I want you... you do need to
sleep right?"
As to prove this Dieveggeth eyelids started to draw close, her knees
growing faint as she lend against Satordi. "Sleep
is nice..." she said and followed Satordi out to feed and
take a well deserved nap.
The next dragon to hatch was a small male foliage. He calmly went to the
woman he wanted and only told her his name.
"Erayken."
"Erayken, do you mind pets?"
Angeli asked.
Erayken thought for a second looking at the two little critters. He slowly
bend down next to Lorindal the gold firelizard. Erayken sniffed her belly,
tickling her. The firelizard fell down and made a happy squeak.
"I like them." Erayken said
and followed Angeli out to eat his first meal.
Shortly after an egg from Ithtyruith's mound broke away, tossing out
another sunset. The male flapped his wings at the edge of the nest and
squeaked in fear as he rolled down the small sloped nest. When he finally
came to a halt at the back of the cavern his wings were tangled, his head
turned up, gazing into the eyes of the person who had stopped him.
"Draca."
he whispered, captivated by the blue in her eyes that whirled almost
like in his own eyes, mirroring them perfectly.
"Yes Ryuen?" she asked.
"I didn't
expect
us to be
so alike."
"Normally we wouldn't, but we're
special." Draca answered smiling down on the heap of
dragon.
"Oh... does
this mean
we can't get
food?"
"No, not special like that." Draca
said foolishly as she helped her bond understand gravity.
The eggs laid silent. A short pause announced itself and almost immediately
a few whispered words were said among the audience. There were still 3
eggs. Two in Aseth's pile and one in Ithtyruith's. But only two candidates
were standing. Trix saw Kyrenath looking around now and again, but she
wasn't worried. Apparently she was a modern dragon who understood that
some hatchlings lingered.
Ithtyruith's egg hatched and suddenly two more dragons walked on the
sands. Maybe Kyrenath had know this rather unusual event. What she
probably hadn't foreseen was the fact that the two hatchlings hobbled as
one to the same girl.
"Menygma!" the obsydian with moon coloured wings said,
"You're mine!"
"No!" the gold winged female said, "I need you!"
Neither of the hatchlings wanted to give way for the other. It looked like
it might end in a fight between the twin brother and sister when Menygma
put her head between the two.
"Do you both like me?" she
asked.
"Yes!"
they said back.
"Do you promise to help me take care of
you?"
"Maybe."
the male said.
"I don't
know..."
the female hesitated.
"Then I can't help you both."
Menygma said.
"I will
help!"
the female quickly changed her mind, "I'm Mavysle."
"I'm Kirdoek
and I'll help
too."
the male said, shoving his sister a little to the side.
"Then it is settled."
Menygma said and sighed at the knowledge of what she had just done.
Two eggs remained, but only one candidate. Even Kyrenath know seemed to
scuttle around a bit worried. She looked at her eggs though she couldn't
change basic math just by wishing it. A soft fog flowed into the cavern.
Trix looked outside assuming the fog originated there. But outside the
view was clear. Trix looked back and suddenly a small shiver lifted the
fog. A girl -what else?- lay on the ground, her arms clutched around an
egg.
"Finally!" Kyrenath
exclaimed, "I had expected you sooner."
But the girl only had eye for the egg in her arms. The violently rocking
egg. She lifted the egg slightly from the ground. The bottom of the shell
gave in and a small dawn dragon fell through.
"Lana?" he asked.
"Is it really you?" she
asked looking dazzled.
"It is me... Zirxon." the
dragon said.
Shaking the girl was led out by a very helpful Cyan and Maira who tried to
explain hours of classes in one single conversation to let her know what
had happened.
Only one egg remained, almost forgotten by the spectacular entrance of
Lana. Almost forgotten for the last candidate, the pale Myrcka was still
looking at it. She squinted and finally gasped as a speck of grey caught
her eye. A tail! The girl leapt forward and helped the last dragon, her
dragon surely, hatch.
"Myrcka."
a voice said.
"Yes?" she asked not
entirely sure what would happen next.
"This is where
I state my name." the dragoness said
helpfully.
"Yes?"
"It's Crystalliss." the
Winter dragon said, "Do you like
it?"
"It's beautiful."
