Trix took her seat on one of the benches in the front middle section. She looked around in the hatching cavern and smiled. With all the commotion of the Halloween clutch gone it was good to see a regular mid day hatching again. The two green dragonesses had announced that morning their eggs would hatch a few hours in the future. Leisurely visitors had strolled in over the morning, chatting and laughing.
At this moment, just past noon the first eggs started to shift. A slow pseudo-movement at first, but it was enough. The dragons flew to their perches and started humming. Two proud father dragons stood at the entrance of the cave to get a better view while their mates lay on the sands with the best view of all. And so it should be.
In all aspects this hatching seemed to be a normal one, but many knew it wouldn't be. Many visitors had come just to see whether the glowing genes could be inherited or if they would disappear. All things considered this clutch wouldn't be the right one to decide that from, Duivelth had led his catch into the Elsewhere. It was almost certain that there would be some glowing dragonets in there.
Trix watched as the candidates were led in, 7 there were for 7 eggs, 4 males and 3 females.
The first Trix spotted was the partly crow-woman Kraia. It was hard not to notice her with her black wings and feathered body. She had come in with another like her, Corvis who was standing for the Chaotic Clutch. Trix still wasn't sure how she felt about that whole business, only time would tell.
The next candidate she saw entering the cave was Wes, a young earthling who had been found by Maira outside a video arcade, whatever that was. At least the finder had brought along some coffee beans as well, Cyan was already trying to grow it in her garden.
Right behind him stepped in a duo of earthling males. One of them trying to get rid of the other. They had been the last to sign up for this clutch, and only at the last minute. Trix smiled as she saw Dirk catching John by the arm, fondling it like it was a puppy or something. Disgusted the other man pulled his arm free and started a conversation with the crow woman which succeeded in making Dirk really jealous.
The remaining three entered, catching the Laedrys' attention. Jahkonu entered, proud and confident as this young kin had always been. He was not the first of his kind to come here, in fact he had come here with another member of his tribe, Eqahkali. But he had already bonded to one of the Lesser Halloweens. The cheetah kin took his place in the semi circle in front of the foliage dragons and waited patiently.
The eggs already started rocking harder when the last two candidates entered. Khana, who had also seen her companion Mecate bond at the Halloween clutch was carrying the smaller Nia, helping her cross the hot sands a bit faster than she could on her own.
The candidates were now quiet, watching the eggs. Even Dirk had given up chasing John for a few minutes, enthralled by what was going to happen. Soft cracking echoed trough the caves and the dragons started singing louder, their music reaching a climax.
All seven eggs were rocking. The first egg broke. One of Solath's clutch that were a few hours older than Thulessa's though that wouldn't stop them from hatching as well. From Solath's first egg came a dark, glowing red body. The glowing blood female shook her damp head, then looked at the candidates with head cocked to one side curiously. She stood up slowly, and made her way unerringly to the candidate she'd wanted from the beginning, the crow woman Kraia.
Kraia smiled down at the blood female with the glowing hide. "Ravenna, are you sure you want me?" She asked the dragonet as Yorin and Lira crooned their approval in the air above her.
Ravenna nodded. "Very. And we will stop the other one, Corvis, no matter what."
Kraia smiled and stroked the glowing head of her dragon. "Yes..."
The first of Thulessa's eggs split after that, revealing a dragon as green as it's mother. the small hatchling flapped his wings and stepped carefully out of his egg. When it stopped to sit and rest a while it got a rather disturbed look from it's mother.
"My son," Thulessa said, "Please hurry up!"
"Ok, ok mother." he said, "I think I'll pick you." stopping in front of Dirk.
"You would pick me, Xistern?" asked Dirk surprised.
"You know my name, don't you?" the foliage dragonet winked and then pushed his bond outside.
Two eggs from Solath's clutch burst open at the same time, spilling two glowing dragons onto the sands, a moon and a rain. The glowing rain shook himself off, doglike, before running over to Wes, crooning as he butted his rider's leg playfully.
"Hi, I'm Mysth."
"Uhh, hi Mysth." Wes said, somewhat lost as to what to do now.
Mysth snorted and began to drag him away impatiently. "Well? Let's go eat!"
"Right." Wes grinned as he followed his dragon.
The moon was still looking through the female candidates, unsure who to pick. Finally, she stopped in front of a pale, dark-haired girl. Khana gasped as the moon dragoness looked up at her.
"I am Machth, and I will be with you, Khana, forever."
"Machth..." Khana smiled, grabbing the silvery head in her arms. "Of course you will..."
The second egg from Thulessa's mound suddenly burst open. Out rolled a bright yellow-orange male dragon. The dragon came to a stop and clambered up, flapping his flame-filled wings to dry them in the warm air. When he rose to his feet his full colour became empty and no-one could miss the bright proud smile on both Thulessa's and Lavira's face when the flame-winged sun male strode across the sands and stopped in front of the cheetah kin.
"Jahkonu." he said.
"Lieytrez." the kin nodded.
Nothing more needed to be said. The new pair left the sands, most likely in a hurry to get to the Furry Frenzy on Planet 20.
A larger egg cracked, and a glowing, dark red head appeared...at the bottom of the egg! The egg shards fell away, and the upside down hatchling screeched as he fell over onto his back.
"John! Little help here?"
John ran over to the blood male and helped the hatchling to right himself, grinning to himself as he did so.
"Thanks, my name's Asisi." The blood said as he nuzzled his rider affectionately.
John just scratched the glowing head and lead the blood off the hatching sands.
The last egg violently shook, the last of Thulessa's children inside, and finally broke in half. The female that fell out was glistering white, hidden behind her nebula wings. The small hatchling looked big-eyed at the small candidate that was still standing on the Sands.
"Daughter," Thulessa intervened, "She will make you proud like you've made me proud. Now go so I can eat."
The small nebula-opal looked at her mother with a scornful look that told everyone that she didn't like to be hurried. She was part opal, she was fast enough to fly to the highest peaks and to the furthest places on Syl'Neriss... or at least, she would be. The female took her first steps and headed for Nia, the Trennie.
"Nia, My name is Volharra." she said bowing ever so slightly.
The hatching ended when the last pair headed for the food tables outside and Trix decided that probably she should stop being so interested in genetics and just be happy about the fact that all dragonets had found suitable bonds. What did it matter if all Solath's babies had been glowing and neither of them showed the special trait of their mother. But then.... that raised another whole set of questions in her head. Laughing Trix shook her head and left the cavern, empty for the next two females to occupy it.
