CAUGHT BY THE RAIN
"Sasun and Susin might as well be
called SaSuSin", one of their friends had said when they'd been
kids. They were fraternal twins but so alike that it was hard to keep them
apart until they'd grown older and puberty hit them with it's hormones and
secondary gender traits. But even then they remained nigh inseparable. But
of course, Meriallp wasn't a large town and most of the children living in
it were often seen together. Especially during the winter when the cold
crept in and sticking to the fires was the best way to spend your
days.
The cold season was coming but the days were still warm enough to allow
people to go out and work. A lot of the younger people had been sent out
to gather what nuts and roots they could find to store for the coming
months. And so had Sasun and Susin.
"There's some nuts up here on the higher branches!" Susin called
and immediately went to climb the tree.
"Wait!" Sasun called and dislodged the nuts with the long stick
he'd brought just for that purpose, "I don't want you falling and
breaking an arm, or worse, a leg."
"I don't think a leg would be worse." Susin remarked.
She was a good musician and loved to play both the small knee-harps and
banjos that the village made. Breaking an arm would mean a long period
without practice and a risk of not being able to play as well in the
future. Breaking a leg didn't sound as bad.
"It would because I'd have to carry you back." Sasun reminded
her, but he understood where she was coming from.
He played wind instruments and was particularly fond of reeds and double
reeds, enjoying the quirky sounds they produced. Not being able to play
them as he wanted to, would be torture. He was already feeling the effect
of the colder air temperatures on the tips of his fingers.
"Hey, is it me, or is it colder than before?" he asked.
Susin looked away from the trees and noticed the black clouds gathering
above them.
"I think we're in for a storm." she said and started to look for
shelter.
The early fall season was prone to getting them and they were notoriously
hard to predict. Just a couple of hours before they'd set out under a
clear blue sky. They had missed the clouds gathering under the coloured
foliage of the trees. The temperature was dropping fast as thick drops of
rain started falling. Not much later, the rain turned into snow and then
thin pricks of hail.
Shivering as the snow and sleet permeated their coats, Susin and Sasun ran
to look for shelter but there was little to be found as the leaves on the
trees around them were pulled free by the force of wind and water.
Bright blue eyes suddenly appeared in a wall of grey and silver. Susin
smacked headfirst into the drak who had been concealed almost perfectly.
The rain drak looked down and extended her wings as a makeshift roof above
the two lost youths, her wingsails marked by an unusual pattern of snow.
"Hail Hail." she greeted them, an
unusual reference to the weather.
"Greetings." Susin replied, a bit more formal than she usually
would, "Thank you." and then the three introduced
themselves.
The roof of leathery wing did little to warm them. She shivered and felt
Sasun come closer to share body heat. They leaned into the drak who
suddenly seemed to sigh.
"What's wrong?" Sasun asked, recognising that the drak might be
sad.
"I jussst remembered my place of birth." Meddinsori
told them, "I wass born in a flhurry of sssnow."
"Is that why your wings are like that?" Susin asked,
"They're pretty."
"It issss. I've been thinking of going back
there. The ssseasson ssshould be chailging about now."
Before her brother could stop her, Susin got that sparkle in her eye that
meant she was having a bad idea and she blurted out:
"Can you take us with you? I've always wanted to be an aspirant and
pair a drak."
"Now you've done it." Sasun sighed.
"What, you probably feel the same way." Susin argued.
"Sure, but it's not up to us."
"Shnow's not the time to be fighting."
Meddinsori said, "But it would be warmer to
take you."
A slightly different portal appeared though neither Sasun nor Susin were
accustomed enough with drak powers to recognise the distinct strangeness
of the gateway. Meddinsori pulled them through and when they appeared on
the other side, they were somewhere far stranger than the castle they had
thought to see.
"Welcome to Ryssslen." Meddinsori
chimed happily, "Oh, I sssee a couple of folkss
from before too!"
And then the rain drak was away, leaving the two of them to fend for
themselves.

FLURRY HATCHING
“It’s
time” came the telepathic call to any who would hear it.
Candidates, spectators and officials all hurried to the designated place
in the Drift. The drak mothers still had their wings screening their eggs
from view, and dozens of the hundred or more visible eggs were rocking
where they sat, the little dragons within working on the double to out and
find their One. Though not all of these would need to bond to survive.
Eggs hatched one after the other, the resulting hatchlings showcasing a
myriad of features, colours and patterns, though with the expected white
and snowflakes being the most abundant. Trying to follow the hatchlings
soon became impossible as they mixed with the novos.
The draks, it seemed, were finally all shelled and collected, and began to
emerge from beneath their mothers’ wings. They were beautiful little
duowinged babies. There were a quartet of white and black dragons with
gold wings. Two had fuzz on their heads indicative of them being draks,
and the other had regular crests. Two had
tiger-like stripes on their hindquarters, but not on either matching set.
Rain Meddinsori looked up to the “Glass” colored dragon proudly.
Bold Rainbow Talveth had also shielded her babies from view as they
hatched, because her mate insisted that it was the proper way for draks to
hatch. She didn’t mind; in fact she enjoyed having the birth of her babies
be a private moment. When she folded back her rainbow wings she revealed a
trio of little fuzz-headed duowings. One had a green body, one had grey
hide and the third white. Their wingsails had a swirly pattern reminiscent
of Malcelebriso’s, and among the black or white (or both) stripy markings
were bold or soft rainbows. Rainbow draks.
Serenla’Taykah had her wings full, trying to shelter her children from
view while they completed the undignified process of hatching. Eventually
she pulled back all four of her wings and revealed not four but SIX
hatchings. Among them was a black with red lightning markings and a white
with gold markings. Not a pure white among the set, but a beautiful
showing regardless.
Sugalurra was the last of the drak-blooded mothers to reveal her children.
She had two mates, and when she stood back to allow her brood their moment
in the spotlight it was not only obvious which three belonged to which
sire, but that they took strongly after their parents. Three had a spiky
old world crest like Samletase, and three had long ears like Selket. All
six had four wings like proper draks. Probably Sugalurra’s drak genetics
being dominant over Selket’s for the second set, as the blue-white biped
only had two wings himself. The six hatchlings cautiously got to their
feet, revealing all six to be bipedal.
Both Sasun and Susin eyed the partial draklings with interest. Would the
draklings think highly of them since they were Icarian? or did such things
not matter? Did they maybe smell different? And did those draklings even
know what Icarus smelled like?
One of the bipedal drak hatchlings toddled towards the candidates.
The Novos. The Aspirants. They had a creamy-white color on their hides,
with burnished gold wingsails and a touch of deep green fuzz that would
eventually grow into a mossy fur on their neck and shoulders at the very
least.
Meddinsori watched as the long-eared baby made their way towards the
hopefuls that she herself had brought. Would they be drak-riders then?
‘Sasun’ a feminine voice said into the
young musician’s mind. ‘My name is Oboetra, and I
choose to mindpair with you.’
Was he expecting to bond with a female? He didn’t seem to mind, as his
lips curved gently into a smile and he repeated her name.
“Oboe-etra…”
Another drak-hybrid was sniffing around, and soon stopped before
Meddinsori’s other pick, the girl Susin. The hatchling had white fur, and
an all-too familiar swirly rainbow pattern on all four of her wings. Not
her child, but her brother’s child.
“Her name is Gitalenasove.” Susin giggled and they went together to meet
up with her twin and his very tall bond.

SQUIRE TRAINING
Meddinsori
was training her own bond, Yahel Diemicana Pariyani and had taken it upon
her to also train the youths she'd judged all those months ago. That posed
to be a bit of a problem as Oboetra was bipedal and some things just were
different to her. But with some help from other dragons around, they
managed. But flight training remained a scary ordeal.
"Sssnowme day it will feel like you've alwaysss done
it." Meddinsori said.
Oboetra, Gitalenasova and Yahel were flapping their wings as instructed to
strengthen their muscles. All three of them were upbeat and motivated,
making the lessons at least pretty enjoyable. When necessary, Sasun and
Susin joined them, on other times they practiced their music and listened
as Meddinsori taught.

KNIGHTHOOD
Time flew fast and before they knew
it, Sasun and Susin had to make a decision about whether or not to return
to Icarus. Meriallp suddenly seemed like a tiny village. Could their draks
even live there comfortably? They could always join the armadas at Castle
DesCas, a place Meddinsori had told them about. But a desert environment
didn't sound right after all this snow. They had grown used to the cold.
That was about the time when a somewhat sketchy elf approached them.
"How about joining the WindChill expedition? We're always looking for
paired knights."
"I've never heard of WindChill." Susin said before Sasun could hold her
back.
The elf grinned and started his salestalk about a magical place of wonder
and oportunities. Where elves, humans and draks would live together as
equals. Where life was an adventure and anybody could help determine the
future.
"We're going." Susin said excitedly.
Even Sasun nodded, "It does sound interesting."
"We can always portal out." Oboetra said with
her innate optimism.
"I'm all for an adventure." Gitalenasova
agreed.
