Trevor and Sapphire Billurinth

HATCHING
The sun was out and added a bit of warmth to the winter chill when the musical hum was started by the clutch' sire Lauwdanomriforith and within seconds other dragons on the island took to singing, alerting everyone that a time of celebration was near. The candidates were called and told to get to the sands as quickly as they could. Trevor was the last one to arrive, after three dragons and two Pernese girls. Trevor had been on Lantessama for about two years. Living at Lantessama had been quite an adjustment but he had helped set up the computer network which made the place a bit more to his liking. He still wore his sunglasses, even though it was winter he just felt more comfortable with them on. People here had a tendency to look you straight in the eye. They were honest and direct, maybe because their dragons could read their minds. Which made standing for a clutch an effort. Did he actually want to share his deepest thoughts with another? But then, if he ever wanted to move freely between places he'd need a dragon. So he'd finally decided to try.
One by one the eggs cracked, toppled or broke and dragons emerged and bonded to the gathered candidates. Until finally there was only one left. It sat very still, worrying some of the bystanders who'd seen tragedy at hatchings before. The dragons around started crooning a bit louder, calling to the hatchling to try once more to break the egg. A quiver and then the egg crumbled into a million pieces, leaving the Sapphire male inside looking like he was spotted. Tired, the hatchling just looked toward Trevor. Feeling an unusual need to make contact, Trevor took off his glasses and barely caught the ending of a whisper.
"What did you say, Billurinth?" he asked.
"Good, you're here. I'm hungry."
Picking up the sleepy hatchling, Trevor awkwardly made his way to feed his bond. The crowd cheered, a sound that made Trevor cringe a bit as he'd seldomly been on the receiving end of cheers but Billirubinth sighed happily in his arms and the world got a bit better just from being together.

ADULT
Years had passed and Billurinth had grown into being a large dragon. By Lantessaman standards anyway. On Pern he'd still be considered on the smaller side for a blue, or at least that was what some of the Pernese riders had told him. But they weren't on Pern..; yet at least. Trevor wondered if visiting that place might be a good start to celebrate his freedom.
"I don't think they have computers there." Billurinth whispered.
"No, I don't think they do. But I don't think I can ever return to earth."
"Why not?"
Indeed, why not? A feeling of dread had always accompanied thinking of earth. Trevor wondered if he felt like he would be apprehended by the police upon his return. But of course he had an easy way out. And he wasn't going to do anything bad... much.
"I'll keep you out of trouble." Billurinth nodded, "No questionable hacks!"
Trevor sighed, getting clean wasn't easy.
"Is there a place you'd like to go?" Trevor asked.
"Maybe Pern isn't so bad a place." Billurinth mused, "Maybe I can join a flight and see how my size compares to what we've been told. Because I am big and strong."
"Don't I know it!" Trevor agreed.
