First Snow of Winter

Part 5: Northern Lights and Dragons
"What?!" Lityan asked, "Ysvelt are you sure you want to do that."
"It's more that I need to prove myself she is dead. I am stuck there, Lityan, in that cave with her." Ysvelt admitted.
"If that is how you feel..." Lityan said hesitant, "But we will come with you."
"But Lityan..." Nizryth started.
"No Nizryth, I can't leave Ysvelt alone, we're still in this together."
Ysvelt looked at his friend and smiled. "You have no idea how good that makes me feel." He said, "It's good to still be a part of the trio."
Lityan hugged her friend and let herself be pulled from the ground. Together they walked to the plains and to Chaltyk who was watching his dragon Xersenyth feed.
"Hey guys!" he yelled waving as he placed his sunglasses on his forehead. "What are you smiling about?"
"We're going on a field trip!" Lityan yelled back, "A quick visit to our home."
"I thought we had discussed this already," Chaltyk said, "We weren't going to interfere, not until they are ready to leave their ways."
"I know, but this is more of a pilgrimage. We won't get spotted."
"That is if we are lucky."
"Yeah we were that lucky last time." Chaltyk remarked. He was against the whole idea and though he got some strange looks from Lityan he couldn't give in without saying what he felt.
"But we have dragons now... and we'll be back in a few days. Come on Chaltyk, don't you want to know if everything is still the same?"
"I know for a fact it is all the same. IceLand never changes."
But no matter how Chaltyk argued the argument of having the dragons overruled all his worries. By the time night was falling over the placid waters of the ocean they were packed and ready to go. The three ventured through the Elsewhere and appeared again a few kilometres from the base Summer Village that had been their own.
Chaltyk held his breath when they came out of the dark nothingness. The magic of the place captivated him again in one single instant. On the back of his dragon the world seemed so pure and untouched. The white landscape seemed to stretch forever on flawlessly flat and faintly reflective. As they were hovering like this the dark night sky suddenly was alive with colours. Wisps of Northern light appeared at the horizon bringing to the ice a whole new dimension of colour.
"Aren't you glad we put our foot down, now?" Lityan grinned.

In the Summer Village the last people left the warmth of the fire in the large communal mound. Maryse was tending the fire, her job for the night and was all about ready to huddle close beside it when Tryl ran back inside.
"Maryse! Come quick!"
Maryse looked at her friend and wondered why she was so worked up. Tryl's cheeks were red, her brown eyes sparking. The short black mob of hair on her head peaky and semi-frozen into weird shapes from the short run outside.
"What is it?" Maryse asked not really wanting to leave the warmth of the fire.
"The shadow of the dragon!" Tryl yelled.
Maryse hastily put on her boots and threw a sleeping fur around her shoulders. When she got outside her heart nearly stopped. In the distance, barely visible in the glow of the Northern lights was a darkness that sucked up a whole patch of stars. The shadow stayed their only briefly and if it hadn't been for the others who had seen it perched there for a whole minute, Maryse wouldn't have believed her eyes.
"What does it mean?" Maryse asked.
A silence fell, but finally Shyobahn opened her mouth, "Death, girl. It means someone is going to die."
Dread spread through Maryse's body as she walked back to the Oval. She looked at the fire and shivered. Who was going to die? Suddenly she wished she could turn back time and stop herself from going outside. Surely seeing the sign couldn't be good.

"Hey! Isn't that that weird girl with her shadow Ersatz?" Chaltyk asked when he too saw the black figure of the True Chaotic.
"Pidazzi? What would she be looking for here?" Lityan answered.
