Part 7: The Glade
The group reached the Glade. The trees parted again and most of the younger ones, Lattio, Ryan and Eriadu remembered their senior year field trip to the glade. As always the dragons of Lyria were looking for new enthusiastic bonders.
"You mean you never came here, Iagador?" Eriadu asked.
"No. I stayed near the coasts on my trip. That made for easier navigation. I've heard stories about this forest."
"We've all heard them!" Ryan said, " But has any one of us ever known someone who really had it happening to him? I think it's just an urban legend to keep the faint of heart out. The last thing the dragons need is people wandering lost around their eggs."
"If I were something hiding I'd do it just like this." Qatar said.
"Like what?" Lattio asked, "There's nothing here!"
"That's what I'd want people to think. Myths enough for people to stay out, but not enough proof for people to come and look for me."
Lattio shrugged: "I still think it's all a bunch of fairy tails."
"You do that, I'll be the one more careful in the forest. I've lived on it's edge for years, you don't mess with it."
"Wooss!" Lattio coughed and left it at that.
Eyrien shook her head. "I haven't been around here either. Think of all
the bugs!" she clutched her scarf tighter around her.
"You don't need to fear bugs." Ryan laughed, "I've enjoyed playing with
them many years."
"yuck! I just don't understand you."
"That is good." Ryan whispered and winked to Lattio.
"What did you say!"
"Darnit! The telepath thing keeps sneaking up on me."
"It's a good thing at that!" Eyrien said, "I'll need every ounce of my
attention on you to make sure you don't go dissing me behind my back."
"So who does know the way around this forest?" Lattio asked, "Do you,
Eriadu?"
"I have heard the way." she smiled.
"Is that enough?" Iagador asked.
"Of course it is. It's all in my head."
"It better be." Qatar remarked gloomily, "I still don't get why I have to
come."
"Yeah why?" Ryan asked.
"Because I want to know what we have to do with each other. Clearly there
has been a mix up in Fate or something because I can't have anything to do
with this persona."
Ryan refrained from thinking. This one was just too easy.
"Just how I remember you." Eriadu smiled.
"I'm sorry. Do we know each other?" Eyrien asked.
"We live in the same block."
"I think I see something!" Lattio screamed.
And indeed did they see a patch of light further down the road. The
clearing that was the Glade slowly shifted into focus and became more
clear. Right when they wanted to enter the patch however they were stopped
by a high pitched scream.
"What?" Iagador asked.
"It... It's behind my back!" Eyrien screeched.
Eriadu turned around and smiled. "It's just a salamander silly. I think
I'll keep it with me. They're supposed to be great with bugs."
She took the little animal from Eyrien's shoulder and placed it on her own.
"Hey little fellow... What is your name?"
"Zink." a woman's voice said.
"What?" Lattio asked.
"The salamander's name is Zink and you are welcome to keep him. They've
been breeding like rabbits these past days."
"Thank you...?" Eriadu said.
"Rycli. I run the Library on the Glade."
"Then you are the person I need." Iagador said, "I'd like to stand for a
clutch."
"Very good. I'll just have Cyprus sniff you out and then I'll place you."
A small green dragon came lurking from behind the library structure. "Oh
come on. They won't bite."
"Really? Because you've said that before when it wasn't true."
"Once! These look decent."
"Hmmm." the salamnder said, sticking her head in the air and smelling, "They're
all aproved! Fire, water, earth, air, air and spirit." Cyprus said
pointing
"All of us?!"
"You are welcome to turn down the offer."
No-one did.
