Kabocha
STATS
Name: Kabocha

usually dependable and collected. however, trying to keep track of 25
teenagers in a dragon adoption center tends to take the best out of any man.

teaching 5 years ago) he's already got a few grey streaks in his black hair.
His grey eyes seldomly sparkle with joy but usually keep a strict and
attentive watch over the outside world.
Family: Harper bred and raised, Kabocha has known little else in his life
than teaching (because he can't sing. he's tonedeaf).

HATCHING
The first clutch after a relative quiet time in Darkling Dawn was about to
hatch. Eggs were rocking, candidates and spectators filed in while the proud
mother-dragon watched.
The first eggs were rocking now, and it wasn't long before one of the
dragons inside fought its way out, and soon it was joined by three more. The
first egg contained a tiny, pale green dragonet, who stumbled towards the
candidates while the other three--a green, a blue, and a brown--were still
breaking out of their shells.
The pale green impressed Mikan. But it was the brown and blue that looked at
the male candidates, including Kabocha. brown dithered for a while, looking
from one candidate to another, but he finally went to Kabocha with a croon.
"I like you, Kabocha. My name is Kurmouith."

ADULTS
Grey eyes looked out over the still quiet lands below. From his weyr,
Kabocha could see everything. It was the time right before dawn and with
good reason, no-one was down on the ground. The only other awake
consciousnesses came from the watchdragon and his rider.
"And that's the way it should be."
Kurmouith yawned.
"I'm just checking." Kabocha whispered back.
"Do you mind if I sleep?"
"No."
Some rustling sounded as the brown dragon took a new sleeping position. Soon
all sounds other than the slow, deep breaths of sleep ceased.
Kabocha wondered what was keeping him from sleep. He hadn't had sleepless
nights in a year, not after he'd stopped teaching and had impressed
Kurmouith. Raising a dragon was hard work, but Kabocha had not minded it.
Teaching had been more stressful.
And yet now he felt tense. His mind and body seemed to be focused beyond
what was humanly possible and not a movement or sound went by unnoticed. The
feeling of impending doom was deeply ingrained in his being and it kept
Kabocha from relaxing like he usually did.
Kurmouith sighed and mumbled: "If you're going to
think at least do it quietly..."
"Did I wake you again?" Kabocha asked.
"Yes. You're very nervous."
"I don't like nervous." Kabocha said, looking out again.
"There's bad nervous and good nervous. Are you
scared about tomorrow?"
"Not in the least."
"Then why be nervous about it? It's going to be
fun."
Kabocha sighed. Tomorrow they'd join a mating flight. Maybe Kurmouith was
right. Why stress when he wasn't even that concerned about it? For all he
knew Kurmouith would not even get close to winning and it would be just
another day.
"I will do my best." Kurmouith said
sounding a little hurt. Male pride acting up and all.
"What?" Kabocha asked, "There'll be more males and only one winner."
"I'll still do my best." Kabocha
insisted.
"Fine." Kabocha answered.
"And if it makes you feel better: yes, I might not
win. Just go to sleep."
