Wild Clutch 2
The eggs are hatching. The thought vibrated
through the isle in more than a few dragons, humans and odd creatures. It
was not necessary to ask which eggs were hatching because an image
accompanied the thought, a view of the ocean with four large sea dragons
playing in the water, jumping and swimming around the four nekrat eggs that
had been donated by the resident flock of unbonded nekrats.
The shores were nearly empty since all candidates for this clutch were
water-dwelling. One mermaid there was and four sibling sea dragons that had
come from Xidaver Isle. The only 'normal' human candidate that had been
listed on this clutch had not shown up for the hatching claiming that
since her clearvoyant winter ceadra had told her she would not bond today
she might as well go watch the other clutch hatch. So you could hardly
call her normal, though only 5 minutes after the nekrat clutch had begun
showing signs of hatching, the two nebula's had also started bugling,
leaving the bay void of spectators.
Not that anyone cared. the dragons were busy conversing among themselves
and Penelay, the mermaid, was busy with Iyru and Relaynah, the first
couple of bonded nekrats to have a clutch in the bay.
Thus it came as quite a surprise when Akinna suddenly shouted: "One
of the eggs has broken!"
7 pairs of eyes scanned the water around them, but they saw nothing, until
bright blue tail lunged from the water, followed by the wet body of a
female wave.
"Rothyst!" the wave shouted, "Look at me! No hands!"
The grey male dragon chuckled and said: "Let me see you do that
without flippers."
"I will practice." the Wave
said with a serious look in her eye, "But
not now."
"No, I can feel you're faint with hunger.
Let me catch you a fish."
Not much later all the water dragons were holding a fish or two in their
mouths, ready to feed whatever nekrat wanted to come their way.
Maybe it was the smell of fresh, raw fish, or maybe it was something else,
but suddenly 2 more eggs burst, creating small whirlpools in the water
where they had been. Had, because the nekrats inside, surprisingly three
of them, were already on the move.
The first to reappear above surface was a bright red female coral. She
made her way carefully toward her chosen, Penelay. When she got there she
looked deep into her eyes and said: "I can
find your family for you, but until that time, let me be all that you
need. My family is big and they will help us whenever we need it."
"Farrah." Penelay said, "I'm
so happy that you came to me, but I have no fish to feed you."
She suddenly felt a nudge on her shoulder and saw Iyru hovering above her
shoulder, carrying a fish to feed Farrah.
"I told you my family is big. Thank you my
mother's cousin twice removed on her father's side."
Meanwhile, the two others, one female, one male, surfaced from the water.
They were headed for the three available water dragons, looking left and
right to see which one of them they might pick. Finally the female Sand
made the first choice.
"Kathyst." she said,
"Chill
dude! I'm just here to give you a good time, get you to more places, and
who knows what the future might bring. That's too far ahead anyway."
Kathyst grumbled in protest at the so unlike him nekrat, but despite his
efforts, the bond had been made and he was glued to the bright yellow
female that immediately dragged her twin brother in front of Xithyst and
said: "Now you."
The Purple Well looked hassled and was clearly not happy with how his
sister had dragged him in front of a sea dragon just like that, taking his
grand entrance away from him. Adjusting his finnae he finally said: "I
did pick you, Xithyst. You are like a gentle anemone in a sunfilled
ocean's morning. You should not hide yourself."
The purple sea dragoness seemed to blush as she crooned, dropping her head
down, giving the fish to her still small companion. "Do
you really mean that Anthon?"
"Of course, my lady, I would never lie. You
know that don't you."
"Yes."
The last egg took it's time to hatch, but when it finally was ready, it
made it's presence known by a huge splash of water, the nekrat inside
jumping from the water until it seemed like it could fly. Floating down
with all his flippers extended, the emerald deep sea, looking vaguely like
Iyru, but greener as if he didn't come from the top layers of the sea, but
from deeper, darker waters, swam toward the last remaining sea dragon.
"Zethyst!"
he called to the
indigo-blue sea dragoness, "I waited last to
let you see that there was nothing darker in this clutch than me."
"That Purple Well was rather dark as
well." Zethyst replied, "And
what if someone else had bonded me?"
"That Purple Well isn't worth being called
dark. He's a powerless, dareless teacher! And I told everyone that if they
bonded you I'd hurt them. I told them of all the trips we'd make and that
I would never take any of them along with me!"
"Such devotion..." Zethyst
said, "You are the right one for me,
Oliveren."
"Now feed me."
Zethyst lowered her mouth to feed Oliveren and wondered briefly if she
would have to catch twice the amount of fish she was used to from now on.
"Not at all, this is just tradition."
Oliveren replied, "I'm very capable of
catching some on my own." his bright eyes glinted
dangerously and his mouth grinned catlike, so ready to hunt that no-one
doubted he'd have any problems of finding fish on his own.
