Hatching 2

Gold Zaranyth and Silver Besanth

"My eggs are rocking." Zaranyth announced.
Cyan awoke startled from her midday nap. "They are?"
"Yes." Zaranyth said, pushing her rider toward the place in the cavern that her eggs lay down in. The eggs were rocking. Cyan, now fully awake called for Lucas.
"He's already coming." Zaranyth told her.
"Thanks, if I didn't have you..."
Lucas stumbled in, followed by the 11 candidates that had signed up for Zaranyth's clutch, one a fairly big dragon who momentarily blocked the sun as she entered. There were only 10 eggs, but with Jybarith still on the sands no-one really worried. Jybarith's  bonders had also shown up to get a preview of what was to come for them.
Cyan looked at the eggs and waited. A cool breeze came in through the cavern opening. Inside the cave the dragons started humming. The eggs started rocking harder.
Finally a creamy wing burst through one of the eggs. Cyan looked at the delicate pattern of light on the wing and wondered if this was one of the changes everyone had predicted of moving outside time and space into the nexus. Frynoth's clutch hadn't exactly been normal either...
The egg broke further and the cream wings made way for a purple body. The hatchling got up and started shaking of the sand that had stuck to her wet hide. Finally she gave up and looked at the candidates: "You, Dressanas, get over here." she said.
The girl, Dressanas, hastily walked over, unsure what to do.
"What do you need, Sempra?" she asked.
"You silly." the dragoness answered, "this one spot behind my wings it impossible to reach and it is driving me crazy with itch!" Dressanas scratched and helped her newfound bond out of the cavern into the warm afternoon.
The next three eggs hatched simultaneous. A blue, a green and a silver. The silver looked at the two other hatchlings, establishing that she would go first. When the blue and green had agreed, reluctantly Cyan added, the silver made her way to the dark girl Iryss from the planet Erizon. The silver sat down beside Iryss and licked her hand.
"My name is Ellis." she said.
Iryss looked down into the big whirling eyes of the dragon and was lost. Why had she ever doubted coming here? Her friends were nothing compared to this. She could make new friends, she could only  have one Ellis.
"Glad you realise it." The dragoness said and followed her bond of the sands.
The blue and green, now ran towards their chosens. Both were headed for the elves. The blue stopped before Warm Hand and waited for his sister to choose from the remaining two. The green picked Orange Peel.
"My name is Fern." said the blue.
"I am Sinas." said the green.
"Where are the other elves? I want to see their dragons!" Fern said.
"We will go there when you are fully grown." Warm Hand replied
"Will that take long?" Sinas asked.
Both elves shrugged and walked of the sands leaving the third for the moment. They waved at her and wished her luck. The girl, Hearth Shy nodded and continued looking at the eggs.
The next egg that burst contained a copper. And another copper. Cyan for a moment wondered if she was seeing double. She wasn't. The two hatchlings walked into a different direction.
One headed for Sapadt, the once and present king who had come with the bunny-girl Sean. The copper flapped his wings: "My name is Birth." After a few fleeting seconds the dragon looked around and asked: "Where are my playmates?"
"Let's go find them." Sapadt said and left.
The other copper went to Ladeyn, the dark researcher from Erizon who had watched from the back how the others had impressed. He felt he was too old already to still bond a dragon and shorten it's life considerably.
"It's the other way around." The copper said, "I will make you live longer..."
Ladeyn raised an eyebrow as he felt the dragon's thoughts enter his mind.
"I am Angith."
Another egg cracked, revealing green wings... and a bronze body. Cyan studied the hatchling interested. The male had all the pose of the bronze, but his wings were a pastel green of mint leaves. The dragonet looked at the males, didn't find what he was looking for and turned to the females. He looked at each one and finally looked happy as he saw the sunset spirit dragon.
"Evalia!" he shouted.
"Zein?" Evalia tried.
"That's me. Do you want to be my bond so we don't have to be alone ever again?" he asked.
"Yes." she said, not being able to say more. She didn't need to anyway, he knew her already.
4 Candidates remained and the last 4 eggs seemed to take a break. The silence in the hatching cavern was surreal. Then another egg cracked open. A green again. The small green dragonet had no problem locating her bond. She crossed the sands without hesitation and looked up at Mike.
"I want to see this place you call home." she said.
"Then we'll go find it." Mike answered.
"Good, but first... I'm hungry." she said with big puppydog eyes.
Mike chuckled and went to find her bond some food.
Another egg hatched and the brown hatchling that fell out knocked over a neighbouring egg that burst open revealing a blue. The blue squealed as his wing got caught beneath his sturdy body. The brown stopped for a minute but then made his way to the other side of the cavern when he was suddenly attacked by a red spark.
"Curly!" Herein shouted, "Stop it!"
Frightened the brown dragonet ran to the man who had yelled at the Dragonder and hid behind his legs. The small transparent bubble flew behind the man and looked at the dragonet. What happened in the next seconds no-one knew, but the dragonder started twirling in the sky. The dragonet stood up and looked at the man he had hid behind.
"I'm Meryk." it said.
"Did Curly scare you?" Herein asked.
The dragonet shook his head and then slowly nodded...Herein winked, "I'll just have to get you a firelizard then." The two left, followed closely by the small red bubble.
Meanwhile the blue was still crying. Ergo made his way toward the blue. He walked the fine line of fate. Going to this hatchling meant he would never be able to win Cyan for him. On the other hand he shouldn't keep hope up. Zaranyth would never be flown by any other than Silver Besanth... and he couldn't let the young blue sit there. He walked past hearthshy who was also running for the blue and helped the hatchling up to his feet. The blue looked in his eyes and they were one.
"You didn't want me?" Culbith asked.
"You got me, didn't you? So I made the right choice."
"I'm glad you did."
After a few moments the blue added: "There will be another."
"Another what?"
"Another love... and I know who it will be."
"Who? Tell me."
The blue shook his head. "You're not supposed to know yet."
Only Hearthshy remained on the sands. The only egg that still was unhatched was small. Still huge for her, but small. She carefully knocked on the shell. She waited. This had to be her egg, right? It wouldn't go unbonded if their still was a candidate.
A soft tapping reached her and a line appeared. Suddenly a head popped out and a wet nose touched her cheek.
"I'm Shivay." the black dragoness said.
"Why do I feel like you've been ready from the start to hatch?"
"Because I was... I just don't like people watching me."
Hearthshy giggled: "How do you feel about elves?"
"Better."
"That's good, You have so many people to meet..."
Cyan smiled as the voices trailed off. Another hatching without problems. It felt good to know things were progressing good. She greeted Jybarith before she left and then went to join the new pairs of dragonriders.
