Hatching 1
Gold
Frynoth and Bronze
Ensith
It's happening."
The soft voice of Frynoth
sounded in her head.
"You're sure?"
Weyrwoman Trix asked.
"Yes, it's not my first clutch. I know very
well."
Frynoth's slightly irritated reply
came.
Trix smiled, she remembered the first time. Frynoth had slept through the
beginning and had only awoken when the first hatchling had broken through
it's shell. She hurried out on the sands. The eggs were rocking. Soft, it
would take another half hour for them to hatch. Trix stepped out and looked
around. Then she spotted D'riven coming from the lower Caverns.
"Get the Candidates ready!"
D'riven dropped the food he was holding and looked up to the hatching sands
opening.
"They're hatching?"
"Yes! Hurry!"
D'riven turned round and went back to the Lower Caverns. He would inform the
candidates. Trix looked at the eggs and wondered which eggs would crack for
which candidate. Which egg for instance would be right for the dark
shapeshifting unicorn? And which dragon would be special enough for the two
shape shifters from the Vella Craen?
The first candidates came in. Ashka and Vaitris, the latter still grooming
some of her horselike mistress' hair. Ashka walked around and finally
stopped before a deep beige egg with red splotches. It could be a glowing
one. Frynoth had shifted the eggs so frequently and the eggs hadn't glowed
again after that first night. Trix just hadn't been able to keep track.
"I like this one."
Vaitris stopped right beside her, not quite
facing an egg. Not that it mattered, the dragonets picked, not the
candidates.
The brown haired cat-shapeshifting Desdane came in, closely followed by her
canine-shifting friend Naeto. Both looked at ease. They knew dragons and
weren't as nervous as the other candidates. Desdane led Naeto into the far
right corner. Trix still didn't quite get how these two could be murderers.
She had always thought murderers would be dark and cynical. Yet these made
her smile.
She interrupted her thoughts about the two shapeshifter when the 2 visitors
from Dimar arrived. Lili and Daman, the boy nervously moving his wings and
tail, while the girl just looked pale and a bit stubborn. there 4 flitters
hovering around them.
Right behind them entered the two Alskyrian candidates. Ree, the forester
and Orin the glassworker. Both of them had really enjoyed the soft tropical
weather of Lantessama. Trix had often seen them laying on the beaches or
swimming.
Last to enter were the two unicorn-people. Mykira wore a soft white loose
hanging dress with a gold-coloured accents. She was all light. Her eyes
twinkled with anticipation. She held Leran by the arm and dragged him toward
the center spot, looking gold Frynoth square in the eye. Leran obviously
wasn't too happy to be here. No inhabitant had commented on his horn, not
after they had seen Aska and Vaitris, but the dark unicorn-man just didn't
trust humans. He hadn't left the candidate quarters since they had came here
a full week ago.
It was almost like the eggs had waited for the last candidates to arrive.
Mykira and Leran were just on the sands when the first egg started rocking
violently. It was a big dark beige egg with blue and white patterns. All
eyes focused on it.
Suddenly a roar sounded from the opposite corner. A very pale blue looked at
the candidates. It just stood there for a while, making sure everyone
noticed her natural flair and sparkles.
"Hello Ashka, I'm Airyath."
The little pale blue sounded very serious and
intelligent. She erased those impressions however by racing to Ashka and
clumsily knocking over a few eggs.
"Oops! I didn't mean too. I guess I can't
fly yet."
Ashka looked deep in Airyath's eyes and found what she had been looking for.
Someone who needed her and who would understood her forever. To overwhelmed
to speak, Ashka left the hatching grounds.
While Ashka left, the big egg
hatched into a bronze dragonet. The bronze didn't even look, he just plunged
forward and found his rider.
"Naeto of the Vella Craen, I'm Hanzath." Naeto looked down, surprised he had impressed a bronze. He and Desdane
hadn't even thought they'd be accepted as candidates. He looked up and
smiled at Desdane before he too left the hatching grounds.
The two eggs Airyath had knocked
over were next to hatch. One nearly exploded as the glowing green male
dragonet inside leapt out. He hissed at the other egg, urging it to hatch.
And it did. It spawned the most beautiful little green female. The unusual
couple made their way to another unusual couple. Lili saw them coming and
pulled Daman's sleeve for him to notice. The dragons stopped. The glowing
green looked closely at Daman's wings and tail and then said:
"I like you, I'm duivelth."
The smaller and shyer female looked at Lili and waited for lili's three
firelizards to land on her before she said:
"Where is this
world you come from? I want to see the trees! My name is Wilgith."
Lili sat down beside the dragonet and hugged her.
"I'm hungry." Wilgith begged.
A small blue male hatched and
looked closely at the two greens. It cocked it's head and seemed to think.
Then it got up and found his rider.
"I'm sure my Caerlet will be big enough for
you Xlymanith"
"Are you sure? I know I'm going to be as big
as a bronze when I grow up! I like the cold too. I know we will be very
happy there."
"How can you like the cold when you haven't
felt it yet?"
"Isn't this place cold?"
the dragon looked puzzled.
"Not really."
Ree grinned and left the sands.
Another two eggs hatched at once.
Two females, but very unusual females. A very small brown that turned two
circles before it headed to the candidate of her choice, Vaitris. Vaitris,
being the only one left standing at that side of the hatching sands couldn't
believe her eyes.
"Don't be surprised Vaitris, My name is
Eladith."
The second dragonet a big female glowing bronze that walked slowly up to
Desdane. Very carefully she avoided the eggshell pieces lingering on the
sands. She walked into the light and smoke seemed to come from her hide.
"I'm Beautiful. But you may call me
Indrimeth."
3 Candidates remained on the sands.
All was silent. A soft wind blew in from outside. Trix hesitated, were the
three eggs remaining duds? Three in a clutch of 10? That was too much. It
just couldn't be. Yet all was silent.
CRACK
It sounded like thunder on a clear day. The two largest eggs, the gold eggs
hatched simultaneous. One male and One female gold made their way to the
little cluster of candidates. The female gold jumped and skipped and flapped
her wings. Happy and trusting she looked in Mykira's eyes and thought:
"I'm Purelith."
The male glowing dragon was a bit slower, feeling it's choice wasn't too
happy about being here. Yet he had to be here, he was his rider!
"Dakaleran! Don't hide from me! I don't care
about your horn, I will protect you from anyone who wants to do you wrong.
My name is Einzelth." Then the little gold
looked up into the dark unicorn-man's eyes.
"Orin!"
The former glasswork apprentice looked up and saw the small glowing brown
male at his feet.
"Why would you look at them when you've got
me?"
"I would never Rogenalth."
Trix looked down on the shells of
the broken eggs. No shattered dreams today, all candidates had impressed,
all dragonets had found a candidate worthy of them. She wondered what would
happen next...
