FIDDLER IN THE WEYR
Jenriri didn't mean to get into trouble. it's just that trouble found him. Barely 8 turns old, he had been excited to visit the Weyr along with his father. His father had told him how the dragons loved their apples, causing Jenriri to look up at him in awe. There was nothing better in the world than dragons. They kept them all safe!
So, when they'd entered the Weyr and he'd been told to go play, Jenriri had gladly set about exploring. Nobody really noticed the young boy as he entered the kitchens, following the sweet and savoury smells of delicious food. After being chased out, the young boy had walked on, following hallways and walkways until he finally entered a room filled with crates and sand.
Curious, Jenriri had opened the lid of one of the boxes. The eggs inside might have been ready to hatch. The flicker of light and the warm breath of a boy being all they needed. And so without knowing what had happened, Jenriri suddenly found himself bonded to a flight of 7 little firelizards.
Their combined hunger was nearly enough to make him faint. Luckily he was found before that happened, but the damage had been done. And when he returned home it was with a following and a headache from the lecture he'd received.

THE BIGGER EGGS ARE INTERESTING
Half a dozen years older and slightly wiser, Jenriri had been helping his father at the fruit farm. His firelizards, when he could keep them in line, were a big help. But Jenriri really adored that the 7 of them never let him be by himself. Even if a couple were away doing whatever firelizards do in their spare time, there were always at least 2 closeby to keep him company.
One day, the entire flight of flits stuck around. It's as if they knew the day would be important.Because that day, shortly after noon, a dragon flew over the small community and proceeded to land in the fields. People dropped what they were doing and flocked to the dragon and his rider. Jenriri was no exception.
The dragonrider was on the lookout and smiled when he saw the boy and his following of firelizards.
"Greetings, Jenriri." the dragonrider spoke, "The tale of your first visit to Ryslen has not been forgotten and you're quite the hero among the younger weyrbrats. You're about at the age where it would be appropriate for you to stand at a hatching and I'm here to bring you the invitation to do just that."
People whispered, some even commented quite audibly. Jenriri was shellshocked and did not know what to say. It was his gold firelizard Esma who nudged him out of his daze by proceeding to pull him closer to the dragon. Apparently he'd have little say in the matter as soon all seven of his flock urged him forward.

HATCHING
Jenriri glanced up, his flock of firelizards was perched high in the hatching cavern and they were as active as usual, chittering, flapping and nervously moving. Maybe they were projecting his own feelings as he had trouble keeping from jumping from one foot to the other on the warm sand. The other novos seemed just as tense so he figured he wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. All eyes were focused on the eggs anyway.
When the first egg cracked, a hushed silence fell over the spectators. The novos leaned forward, as if trying to get closer to the hatchling that was soon to appear. A sigh went through the crowd when a green hatched. Then another green, a blue and a brown followed closely. Jenriri could not keep up as more eggs cracked, shattered or broke in half.
Suddenly, a dark blue hatchling with a shiny hide approached him. The dragon appeared to be able to delve deep into his mind and soul. And maybe that could be said for all dragons but Jenriri knew this was different.
"How good of you to notice. You and all of yours will be mine from now on. Call me Saimarth."

ADULTHOOD
Saimarth had grown. He'd kept his stunningly shiny dark hide, a sign of health and a testament to the diligence of his bond. J'riri never missed a spot, never cut corners and above all, had the eager help of seven firelizards and a small contigent of younger siblings and other children from his village.
"Let me know if it's too much." J'riri reminded his bond.
"I'll never get tired of this!" Saimarth replied, as always.
The blue dragon could not fathom that some would find all these little humans a burden. They were all so fun to play with. So full of wonder and joy. And he greatly enjoyed picking them up, tossing them in the air and showing them his teeth or brandishing a roar for their pleasure.
One day he'd have little hatchlings of his own. He hoped he'd get to be part of their growth as much as he was part of the lives of these human children. That wasn't tradition on some planets. But Saimarth had knowledge of others. he could hear their calling. When his rider was a little more mature, they would surely visit those faraway places that were just pictures in his mind for now.
