STATS
Name: Mei Li
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Race: Human (long-lived)
Class: Mystic (part divination, part sorcery, part
parlor tricks) Description:
Mei Li is a slight, slender woman with tanned skin and
dark brown, straight hair. She has almond-shaped eyes with brown irises
and a straight, albeit squat nose. Her mouth is on the smaller side and
would be called 'disapproving' by some. Mei Li always dresses the part of
mysterious diviner: wearing bright colours, flowy mantles and a lot of
bling.
Personality: Mei Li, despite portraying it
flawlessly, has a dislike for the mysterious, the ethereal and the
otherworldly. She is in fact down-to-earth, practical and far from
superstitious. She is however crafty and cunning and knows that a lot of
people do believe in the things that go bump in the night. And it's quite
easy to take advantage of them. Mei Li leads a nomadic existence,
travelling where the wind takes her. She briefly stays at towns, slightly
longer in cities but never long enough for the magic to wear off.

Mei Li let her robes rustle and flutter as she entered the
establishment. The place catered to tourists and locals, offering a cosy
atmosphere along with drinks and plain fare. It was neither too rich nor
too shabby and a lot of families were present. Just the crowd she loved to
work.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all ages, feel free to come consult me
on what the future has in store for you."
Mei Li made a little show of her cards, dice and gemstones and then took
her place in a secluded booth. She'd gotten permission to work from the
establishment owner who was a friendly woman that was just a tad too
gullible and would not be getting everything she could have out of the
deal. But Mei Li would not complain. She'd probably read the owner's
fortune as an extra to ease her conscious.
People came up, some amused, others serious, but all left with a good
feeling and some decent advice, even if not every one got a real reading.
Sometimes learning about a future would destroy it's chance to happen and
that was a dangerous line to walk. So Mei Li performed her tricks, wowed
children with her card tricks and mystified adults with her crafty
messages.
And then something peculiar happened. A tall man of middle age with red
hair and beard entered the tavern and approached her. Such men weren't
usually the type to seek advice from a fortune teller so Mei Li was wary.
There was also something in the air that made her extra cautious, as if
Fate was about to make her the butt of a joke. Catching herself, Mei Li
shook her head and stopped that foolish notion before it could make her
mess up.
"Greetings mr...?" she asked.
"Ch'nayral, wingleader here at White River Weyr." the man introduced
himself.
"I hope the dragonriders know that I'm not doing anything shady." Mei Li
said on the defensive.
Ch'nayral smiled and held out his hands in a peaceful gesture.
"It's nothing like that, just a visit out of interest."
"Would you like a reading?" Mei Li asked, surprise creeping into her tone.
"Would that be so strange?"
Mei Li shrugged and readied her cards."
"Pick three and place them in front of you." she instructed.
As Ch'nayral complied, Mei Li watched the man more closely. Something
tugged at her senses but it had been too long since she'd had a view of
her own future so Mei Li did not recognise it for what it was: the gears
of her own fate aligning. This event would have happened regardless of
what choices she'd made differently in her life and there was no escaping
what would follow.
"Let me have a look at your past, present and future." Mei Li said,
indicating each card in turn.
"I'm pretty sure my present involves me taking you to the Weyr as a
candidate." Ch'nayral confessed.
Mei Li froze, her hands above the Hermit, a card usually indicating an
exemplatory life, next to it was the card of Judgement for the present and
then the Sun for future, representing first realisation and then
expansion.
"A searchrider..." she realised.
"That I am." Ch'nayral nodded, "And I think you have great potential."
An ace of cups slipped out of Mei Li's deck as in utter agreement with her
potential for love and commitment that would warrant such a statement.
Giving in to Fate, Mei Li sagged on the bench and after a few stunned
moments, she started packing up her items.

HATCHING
It was a few weeks later that
Mei Li finally faced her fate. She and the other candidates were walled to
attend the hatching. Cohrah Dehnlaleeh, a Skala dragon that had a lot of
equine features, looked at the candidates approaching and let out a short
whinny in acknowledgement.
After everyone had found a place and the benches for the spectators had
been filled, the first egg hatched, followed by another and the more. The
dragonets emerging sported gemtone-hues in all the colours of the rainbow.
They had hooved legs, leathery wings and a long mane of hair. One finally
turned toward Mei Li, a female glowing in a subdued pink-rainbow.
"The stars must have
aligned for us,"
she quipped, "Call me Nyanmoth."
