Setting & History

Ages past, when Syl'Neriss was but a baby in the universe, the miracle of life touched her. In her warm equator area animals were born, crops were grown and the people created culture, passing on the traditions and teachings to their children. Years, decades, eons passed and life evolved and thrived. Now Syl'Neriss was a shimmering diamond, bursting with life and opportunity. She was a twin sister of Earth, untouched by pollution and industry... until disaster struck.
Ever so slow Syl'Neriss was pulled into the non-existence of the Elsewhere. This strange and barren void of blackness that borders on the edges of the universe wouldn't have meant a big change since with Syl'Neriss the sun and other planets of the solar system were pulled in. Life would have continued to manage if that had been all.
Maybe Life would have found a successful defence against the planet's turmoil as it drifted away. Some of the life in fact did find a way. Fleeing from burning temperatures in the equator zone the humans and animals fled to the North pole where life was still possible. Centuries again passed and the life they had led before was forgotten, the traditions diminished to fairytales about a magical Southern place where there was heat and water that didn't mean death if you fell into it, with magical creatures like rabbits and small birds that sang, not shrieked. And life adapted, like it always does, clinging to whatever opportunity it can seize. Simply grabbing what it needs and using it.
It's never that simple. The Elsewhere, barren though it was had also sprouted life. The Black Spirits, twisted dragons shrouded in shadows had reached Syl'Neriss' corner of the Elsewhere. These devourers of planets were hungry, and the queens were heavy with new life, more parasites to suck life out of the beautiful lost planet.
What was Life to do? There was nothing it could do for sure. The humans on Syl'Neriss were nomads, struggling for survival that left little time for inventing improvement. They had no clue as to what was literally hanging above their heads.
Not far off, on a planet called Syldan, a human eye fell on Syl'Neriss. This eye, belonging to a body and more important to a mind that had access to the most effective defence against the black spirits saw the planet in peril. The mind, belonging to a young dragonrider with an ambitious streak saw the opportunity. Syldan was overcrowded and Syl'Neriss lay for the grasping. Uninhabited (or so she thought), untouched, but it would remain so for not much longer. 

ERA 1: Shadow of the Dragon

The Dragonriders of Syldan colonised the large islands of Syl'Neriss but avoided the main continent. The people of IceLand, as the natives now called their territory, remained in hiding. Nightmarish tales of shadowy creatures in the shape of dragons were passed on. To see one was a sign of great calamity and cause enough to be cast out of the community. And being out alone in the harsh wilderness of IceLand meant certain death. 
So people remained indoors. Hid beneath the ice and snow. They had become so good at hiding that not even the resident dragonriders realised they were there. But that slowly changed as searchriders for the Ryslen Flurry managed to bring a few native IceLanders to their place in the Nexus.

ERA 2: Generation of Change
Those newly impressed dragonriders eventually returned to their own planet. They could not return to their homes and villages as to touch a dragon meant to be tainted. They were instead taken in by the community of dragonriders on Lantessama Isle where they lived and worked alongside the people protecting their world from worse.
The IceLanders still kept to themselves and most found comfort in being with others who'd been through the same. They intermarried and started families. These children were brought up in the freedom of the Modern Nexus but were also taught the traditions of their heritage. As the children grew and became adults in their own right, they formed a plan to bring prosperity and freedom to those IceLanders who were still hiding. Why would they need to suffer when there was an entire continent to inhabit?

ERA 3: A New Beginning

With communication restored and a new alliance built, the people of IceLand are now free to chose how they want to live. Some prefer to keep to the old ways while others are trying their luck in the more temperate climates just south of IceLand. Maybe the next generation will venture out into the rest of the continent where some of the original dragonriding IceLanders have created a settlement. One thing is for sure, there is no longer a means of hiding out for the dragons as they search for promising people to bond to their young.
