Wes

HATCHING
Wes was nervous. He felt silly standing on these sands. There were more people around him, some he knew, some he didn't. Neither of them had wanted to give him quarters for when he went back home. Easy come, easy go, he thought, there weren't much people around here who even knew what quarters were. He had gotten a lot of quarter biscuits though.
Suddenly the eggs started hatching. When the first dragon emerged his thoughts went out to Blink. Would it feel the same for her? Or had she already impressed?
Wes didn't know and he wouldn't fine out any time soon either. Two eggs hatched. One of the two, a male glowing rain shook off the moist that was still clinging to his body and then ran to Wes. At first Wes thought he might be headed to any of the candidates standing beside him... but the closer the dragon came the more Wes realised he was heading toward him.
The dragon bumped into his leg and crooned
"Hi! I'm Mysth!" he said.
"Uhh, hi Mysth." Wes replied.
Mysth snorted, sneezed and looked at Wes with great expectations. When Wes didn't make any move, the dragon started towing him like he was a broken down car.
"Well? Let's go eat!" he shouted hungrily
"Right." Wes said, grinning. Suddenly the shock of impression had faded and he could feel the immense hunger of the small hatchling. How could it be this hungry?
"You try rationing your egg-white." the dragonet said slobbering down some meat.
"I don't like egg-white." Wes said.
"You don't?" Mysth said, "Maybe I've made the wrong choice..."
"That means more for you." Wes said, turning the statement around.
"That's good!" the rain said, returning his attention to the meat.

Glowing Rain Mysth

FLEDGELING
"Steady... Steady." they were urged from the ground.
Mysth wings extended, balancing his weight carefully made a serious attempt to get more steady. But his attempts were antagonised by Wes who was trying to keep from laughing. The idea was so silly he couldn't help himself. They were not flying, no Mysth was standing on one hind leg, wings extended to get more balance. Apparently he needed the practice before they could fly.
Wes felt his body move when the laughter finally left him. The dragon caved in.
"Ahh!" he had time to shout before he felt Mysth's bulk cushion his fall.
"What was that?" their instructor asked.
"Laughing, Maira." Wes answered, "I'm sorry."
"Then why are you still laughing?" Maira asked.
"I can't help it!"
"I see... class dismissed for today."
"Why won't you just let them fly?" the lazy voice of Dresynith came from the beach.
"Yes, why don't you?" Wes asked.
"Because if you're acting like this, you'll crash."
"But we'll be over the ocean!" Wes whined.
"That is not the point young man," Maira said half scolding, "What if Mysth gets wounded?"
"He likes the water, you've seen him. He knows how to dive." Wes tried.
"The fish like me." Mysth added to no-one in particular.
"Can little fish carry you to the surface when you can't?" Maira asked.
"The sea-dragons can." Mysth said dreamily.
"We don't have seadragons around here." Maira insisted, "Nothing beside that shadow-snake and he doesn't seem like the type to help."
"Oh but there are... they come here from beyond, sometimes and then we play." Mysth insisted.
With that cryptic note Mysth flew back up and started balancing again, this time without Wes on his back which improved his posture mightily.

ADULT
Wes sighed. Dragons could be such stubborn creatures. That he had learned from experience. Not too long ago Mysth had insisted he fly another female. He hadn't won that flight, but Mysth hadn't seemed to be very put off by the failure. Wes himself hadn't minded much either. He'd not even wanted to participate at all to start with. So why was Mysth so dedicated on doing complicated flight movements lately?
"We'll get visitors next week."
"Who?" Wes asked.
"Sulai and her green Nuath."
"Oh so now you know her name."
"It would only be right to know the name of the dragon that I'll be chasing next." he said full of confidence.
"Over my dead body. Besides who says you'll have a chance."
"Ah, but see. You and her rider have a bond already. I'm sure to win."
"I doubt that. Blink doesn't even like me."
"Whatever you say." Mysth ended the conversation, trailing away leaving with only a slight air of know-it all-ness.
