PROPHETIC
POETRY
Yue waited for the next client to enter the tent-like space.
Partitioned away to some privacy by a multitude of gauzes, silks and
brocades it wasn't exactly as private as most clients would wish but it
was a necessary means to protect the priestesses. A bad reading could
incite violence, a careless word could inspire lust and a voiced opinion
could spell death.
Though Yue knew the dangers, the position of priestess was undeniably
profitable. It was also a sacred duty that too few people took serious.
Not too many parents allowed their children to learn to read and write,
meaning that a lot of potential diviners went unnoticed. Although some did
manage to show their powers through spoken words.
A man entered but Yue made it a habit to not look directly at her clients.
That worked out better in the long run. She asked for his hand and then
dipped her brush in the ink. Descending in the writing trance was actually
a really pleasant feeling. Like creating a little world of her own where
no-one but the gods could enter. She waited for one of them to come to her
and through her, the god connected to her client and when the god left,
whispered words remained inside of her. Writing down those words and then
interpreting them was the second part of her job.
The early moon shines
Bunnies frolic beneath it
Sweeter than sugar
The trance faded but something felt
off. The man in front of her looked puzzled. The poems were always a bit
strange but this one was something else. For one thing the moon was a
decidedly female symbol. Going over the words again and again, Yue could
only come to one conclusion.
"Excuse me, I think this prophecy is for me personally. This has never
happened before."
The man started to protest but Yue quickly rang the little bell that was
hidden below the table and she added:
"Please take this client to one of the other priests. I was unable to help
him."
The least she could do was make certain the man would not be charged for
her time. Yue feigned illness and soon found herself in her room. Her mind
feverishly went over the poem. It still rang loud and clear in her mind.
The moon had to be a reference to her person. But what did frolicking
bunnies and sweet sugar mean? Would a time of bounty be in her near
future? Would she find a lover? Bunnies were a symbol of fertility. Yue
dared not hope. She was too young to retire from her duty and personal
relationships were not allowed while she served the gods and the people.
But something about the text made her think of carefree days and sweet
memories...
"Not a lover but a lifelong companion." A
young voice sounded.
Yue looked up, surprised to see a dragon floating above her bed. The
dragon was cream-coloured with a white belly, red fur and long ears. Those
made her think of her prophecy immediately.
"Sometimes those in power give direct messages.
Especially when their beloved creations ask for help."
"What will happen now?" Yue asked.
"We create a bond and no-one will be able to sever
it."
"Am I allowed to?"
"No-one will object. Or they'll find me their
enemy."
Yue looked directly at the dragon, their eyes met and a multitude of
information pushed through her mind. It was similar to the trance she'd
come to know, but much more direct and much more intimate.
"Yulelog." she breathed, knowing her dragoness like she knew herself.
"I'm looking forward to our life together."

FLIGHT
Yulelog Nightspark summoned her little
air elemental and set it loose inside the temple. Curtains billowed and
people gasped when the cool breeze touched them. She sighed. Playing her
little games was fun but she couldn't deny that she was bored. Yue was so
serious, the girl needed a long vacation to have a little fun.
Yulelog realised a perfect way to get her partner to relent to a little
rest and recuperation and it would be fun for her too. Quickly the wily
bunny set her plan into motion. By nightfall they would be on their way.
With the approval of Yue's superiors and their blessings to stay out for
as long as they wanted. Yulelog was a divine messenger after all and she
could use her status to her advantage.
