STORY
Magda dug her toes in the dirt. It was a habit she'd developed over the past couple of years. Even when she was doing something else she was always on the lookout to add to her collection. Everyone in the small farming hold knew this so she was often brought stones by the other children and she even had deals with some of the farmers that she could rummage through the stones they cleared from the fields when she helped remove them. It was hard work but worth it. Not everyone appreciated her love of rocks but that didn't matter.
Magda did wonder about the future. There was little hope for her to actually find work related to her love of rocks. Mining for gems wasn't all that appealing, she wouldn't be able to keep the rocks she found. Farming might not be so bad since it was what she knew. Would she find a husband who understood her? Would she have children? She could hardly imagine herself like that. She could see herself digging in the dirt and looking for rocks as an old lady though.
Suddenly her feet touched upon something hard. Magda's eyes darted down and she saw the delicate curve of something that had been hidden in the dirt. Digging carefully around it, as she had learned by misadventure that fossils were often fragile, the curve suddenly quivered and fractured. And then a brown head poked out of the shell.
Magda let out a startled yell and took a step back. But then the brown firelizard tilted his head sideways and looked at her with expectant eyes.
"You want food?" Magda asked.
The firelizard let out a small chirp and yawned. Magda shrugged and pulled out some dried meat strips she'd brought as a snack which the firelizard devoured with gusto.
"I guess you're mine then. I'll call you beet since these are beetfields." she grinned.
Beet didn't seem to mind the odd name and fell asleep, tired from his hatching. But how was she supposed to take care of a firelizard? Nobody else in the hold had one since they were far removed from a Weyr or a beach where they might breed.
As Magda returned home, she was in luck. The harvest had been plentiful and a few carts had been loaded up and were headed for the Academia. It would by no means be a short voyage but her parents agreed that Magda could join them to learn what she needed to know about firelizards. Once again Magda realised she was being cared for and she counted her blessings.
A sevenday later, the carts arrived and Magda was greeted by the sight of flying dragons. Beet seemed to be doing okay too. He was eating and sleeping a lot, often cradled in a shawl that Magda tied close to her chest. Upon hearing the dragons' roars, the brown firelizard perked up and crawled outside of Magda's tunic. And then he flew for the first time since she'd found him.
But to her horror, Beet seemed to fly higher and higher until he was but a speck in the sky.
"Beet!" she called, hoping to avoid him pestering the dragons.
"Leave him be, he's just going to say hello to his big cousins." A man called from the gates.
"Won't they hurt him?" Magda asked a bit worried.
The man laughed, "He's probably to fast to get eaten."
Magda paled and the man noticed.
"I was joking, dragons don't eat firelizards. Let me show you around."
The dragonrider led them along the buildings and showed them where to unload their produce. When they were done he turned to Magda and asked: "How would you like to see some real dragon eggs?"
"Can I?"
"Of course, it's not like you'd try to steal them or break them, right?"
Magda shook her head and followed as the dragonrider told her about the similarities between firelizards and dragons. When he saw the wonder in her eyes when she saw how big the eggs were he nodded satisfied.
"I think we have a place for you here."

HATCHING
Magda hurried to the hatching sands. Beet flew ahead of her, urging her on with his chirps. In the past months she'd learned a lot about dragons, firelizards. Her days had been filled but she'd managed to go out and look for rocks. She'd met other people at the Academia. Dragonriders, Teachers and students, but also plenty of people who kept the school running. Some she didn't like, some didn't like her, but there were a precious few who got along with her and Magda counted her blessings that she could ask advice to some of them.
As she entered the hatching sands she stood a bit to the side as she hadn't really formed friendships with the other candidates. It took a while but then the eggs started hatching. One after the other dragons bonded and people cheered. And then there hatched a deep blue dragoness with lighter stripes. She had an elegant build and moved easily across the sands.
"You're mine." she proclaimed in Magda's mind, "My name is Rifaith."

ADULTHOOD
Magda returned home on her blue dragoness. Beet clung to her neck and chirped when he felt her joy and pride at coming here as a dragonrider. Though she might not be able to stay here any more, Magda wanted to visit as often as she could.
"And with me that won't be a problem." Rifaith remarked.
"You're wonderful!" Magda agreed.
"Wonderful enough to maybe rise when a slot opens up on the flight boards?"
"If you want to. But no annoying riders. Only people I like."
"I wonder how they'll put that restriction in practice." Rafaith rumbled, "But we can always discuss preferences."
