Chapter 2: Found!

Fyr walked over to the stall and looked casually at the goods. She would take one of the older apples.
"Why old?" the spirit interrupted. "I say we go for a fresh one."
Fyr felt her arm extending. No! She hadn't checked if it was clear to go. If they saw her they would catch her. The spirit inside her didn't care. They wouldn't catch him, just her. He just wanted to taste the apple through her. Maybe feel a bit of action. Fyr felt helpless as she grabbed the biggest apple in the crate and started running.
"No! No! No!" she kept telling the spirit but it was no use.
Aghast she heard the man yell at her: "Hey you!"
Her heart pounded in her chest and she ran even faster.
"Thief!!" she heard and then the cry was taken over by a hundred people more it seemed. Everyone on the market seemed to turn toward her, looking at her, trying to catch her. But the spirit hadn't had enough yet. He vaulted her in the air, making her jump over all sorts of barriers. He was enjoying this she felt.
"Stop it!" she yelled again.
"What and let you get caught? I thought you didn't want that."
Fyr could feel him searching her mind. And then he stopped. She could feel a strange sort of amazement from the spirit as he said:
"My, my, you aren't helpless, are you?"
"Noooo." she brought out.
"Yessssss."
Sparks flew from her eyes and suddenly the market place was on fire. The red-yellow flames spread fast over the canvas stalls. Fyr could hear people screaming. She didn't want this. And still they would come after her. They had seen it happen, they would be afraid of her and they would put her away. Or even kill her. This didn't bother the spirit at all, he was too busy enjoying the spectacle and feeling the warmth of the flames without getting burned.
Finally the spirit had had enough. He let her float out of the burning village. Outside the village he dropped her. Fyr looked down and saw she was still carrying the apple. Though all she wanted was to throw it away, she was hungry. She ate it fast and looked back at the smoking village. The black smoke drifted towards the sky, away from her. It would be noticed.
Fyr got up and started walking.
"What, not saying thanks for me getting you food?" the spirit asked.
"You got me into trouble!" she called back.
"Ahh, but you liked it deep inside."
"I did not!"
"I felt it, you wanted it."
Fyr shut up. She didn't know if the spirit was telling the truth. The fire inside her did like getting out and she enjoyed it's warmth. So maybe on a basic level she had enjoyed it. Fyr felt sick to her stomach.
"Oooh, company." the spirit said delighted.
Fyr looked back and saw a cloud of dust behind her on the road. Horses. They would get to her quick. Fyr started running, dragging the spirit along against his will.
"Hey! I want to stay and watch them." he said.
Fyr was too scared to hear him and just kept running. She dashed through fields, jumped over small fences. She looked at the forest knowing it was her only hope. She would have to lose them in the forest and then she'd be safe.
"They'll keep looking for you. You destroyed their village."
"You destroyed it."
"Technically, but they don't know that."
"I'll tell them!"
"No-one will believe you. You are rubbish."
Fyr concentrated on her breathing again, ignoring the spirit. Something she should have done from the beginning.
She didn't reach the forest. Inside she could feel the spirit cheering. If only he would shut up. Fyr could feel the horses breathing. She could hear them running, like thunder, behind her. The men started urging their horses for greater speed to surround her. Quick as a rabbit she turned and headed for the river running beside her. She hadn't really paid attention to it but it was a deep, wide river. The horses wouldn't be able to cross it.
"Help me!" she told the spirit.
"No."
"You got me into this."
"Maybe, but I want to see you get caught."
In her despair Fyr reached deeper inside her than she had ever done. She reached inside the spirit and grabbed a hold of his power. She had never done this before and didn't think she could do it, but she did.
Fyr jumped in the air and landed on the water. She kept running and felt her feet touching the water without falling in.
"I don't like this." the spirit said.
"Well you should have left when I asked you to." she said.
The horses were still running beside her. She wasn't planning on reaching the other side anymore. She wanted to fly down the waterfall that was approaching fast on the horizon. Inside she could feel the spirit squirming and turning to get her away from his power.
Right above the waterfall he suddenly found a way. The spirit disappeared and she was left powerless. Fyr fell. Faster, ever faster she fell down the fall. She screamed. It wasn't a very high fall, but to her it felt like dieing. She fell about 4 meters and landed in a deep pool of water breaking her fall. The fall tried to grab hold of her to push her off the next cliff, but she managed to reach the small beach first. Above her the riders looked down, shooting arrows. Fyr crawled further over the beach and finally found shelter in the forest. She was tired. Too tired to think.
Get away. she told herself, but she didn't listen. She wanted to sleep. She was cold. A little fire would warm her.
No! No fires, not ever again. And no spirits either. Not for a long while. Fyr started crying. She closed her eyes and hugged her knees. She would just stay here a few minutes to rest. Not longer.

"Hey there."
Fyr woke up startled and looked around. She didn't see the men at first but she saw them soon enough. One was long and pale with a strange face. It was too long to be normal. The other seemed to be his opposite. He was short and black with a broad face and earrings.
"Are you the one that ran over the water?" said the short one.
"No." she said panicking.
"See we know it's you. That's why we're here."
"There are people who will take care of you." the long pale man said with a voice that chilled her to the bone. The voice was very high and still like a ghostly note played on a flute.
Fyr started crawling back to the fall. Everything was better than getting caught. She had survived one fall, maybe she would survive the others.
"She's going to run TG5-666." the black one said.
"I won't let her." the pale one said and smiled.
Fyr got up and started running from them. They were bad. Suddenly the pale one disappeared and appeared again right in front of her. Fyr made a soft scared noise and turned around. There was the black one. Though he was smaller than her she could see he was strong.
"You're coming with us." the black one said, "TG-666 get us back to the institute."
The pale man nodded, grabbed them both and then she was gone. She just knew she was nothing at that time. She was a speck of dust in space and didn't have any control of the situation. She would be lost if the pale one messed up. She wanted to panic, but she couldn't. She couldn't feel anything.
The next moment she was herself again. It was midday and the sun shone down on her from the strangely seagreen sky.
"Welcome to the institute." the black one told her and led her in.
