Gremyne Sunsets
A loud cry ventured through the
Citadel when Zende was reading her book. They were such marvellous things.
Zende had learned to read, but to actually have multiple books of her own
was a dream she had never dared hoping for
"What are you doing sis?" Zonder asked.
Zende looked up and opened her mouth. How odd that the one title he had
given her meant more to her than any other. Sister. How odd it sounded when
she had never known him... but how she liked it.
"Reading." she said after a short hesitation.
"When the eggs are hatching?"
"They are?!" Zende yelled, raising herself from her chair,
"I've got to get ready!"
"No time! Just go."
Zonder grabbed her hand and dragged her down to the main square and off into
the hatching sands. Already some dragons had hatched. Other candidates were
also filing in and both Zende and Zonder hastily followed them in.
"What are we supposed to do again?" Zende asked.
"Wait." Zonder said, "Are you having a blackout?"
"Eh... Yeah, since I can't even remember where we are."
"Relax. It'll work out."
Zende tried to calm herself down, she tried regaining the selfcontrol she
was so proud of.
Eggs were cracking around her: blues, greens, browns and even another
brown-bronze.
Then a short break that seemed to cut the hatching in half. Zende breathed
in heavily, wondering if time could freeze all of a sudden. Then another egg
hatched and out popped a strange green-blue-grey.The dragoness was dubbed
Ocean and found her rider without problems. Two more eggs hatched. Two
blues, but there was something wrong with one of them. There was sand
sticking to his wings... or were they gold? Zende couldn't see it clearly
until the sun shone through the opening of the Sands. The wings lit up in a
fiery orange-yellow gaze, reflecting the sun like metal. They were
gold.
"Zende?... I'm
sorry to ask
so quickly... but I'm
very Hungry...
Food?" Zende suddenly heard in her head as the blue-gold made
contact. Zende watched awed as the dragon, HER dragon flapped open her wings
and showed them once more to the waiting crowds. She felt proud as the crowd
cheered and firmly said, hoping she wouldn't start crying:
"Yes Mardoveth, We can get you food."
Zende led away her dragon but as she fed Mardoveth outside she kept peering
inside to see how, when and what Zonder would get. The next dragon to hatch
was a large medium sized black with white wings. The white of his wings
seemed to darken his hide beyond what was possible. Every candidate still on
the sands inched forward, hoping he'd be theirs. But the dragon only wanted
one. Zende cheered as she saw him stride toward Zonder. They gazed into each
other's eyes and then Zonder stepped toward the exit, nudged on by his bond.
"We made it." Zende said as Zonder came outside.
"We sure did." Zonder said grinning..."If only
mother..." a shadow crossed his face.
"It's a time of new beginnings, Zonder." Zende said,
"Wherever your mother is she'll be happy."
"Yeah." Zonder said, regaining some of the joy of the day in his
voice and eyes. "Zende, I want you to meet Olelikoth."
"Nice to meet you." Zende said patting the black-white dragon,
"This is Mardoveth." she continued pointing to her own marvellous
companion.
Mardoveth
