Falas Weyr
"This",
P'mir said turning around making broad arm gestures, "is
Falas Weyr."
Ikron, Evron and Mireille looked around to see what they had left Gremyne
for. The day was half past and people were working all around them. But the
sight that caught their eye was most probably the dragons resting in the
afternoon sun. Hundreds of them sleeping, sitting and hanging on the
Weyrcliffs.
The blue dragon that had brought them here could only be called small in
comparison to the other colours. And he had seemed so huge when he had saved
them, appearing out of nothing in the sky.
"I'll have to warn you, " P'mir said,
"Being a candidate is no picnic. You'll have to
work hard... but until I write you on the candidate board you are free to
explore. Come back to me by the evening and I'll introduce you to Gerlana
the weyrwoman who'll take you to your rooms."
With that said P'mir crawled back onto blue Siyeth and flew off.
"And now we're lost." Evron remarked.
"It's not so bad. We are free to explore."
Mireille said and turned around. "What would you
say if we went swimming? I've never seen a sea before."
"It's a lot like a river, only saltier."
Ikron commented dryly.
"Maybe a walk on the beach? We have to do
something before they snatch us away to do chores." Evron
suggested.
Ikron shrugged and followed Mireille and Evron out to the beach. Mireille
kicked out her sandals and started dancing on the sand.
"It’s wonderful!" she cried.
"Glad to see you happy with so little." Evron
yelled back and laughed.
"Who said I was happy with little!"
she cried back, "I’ve got Ikron and my
freedom."
"Hear that?" Ikron asked… "I
make her happy." With emphasis on the ‘I’
"Oh, remember without me you wouldn’t be
hear."
"No without you I would be here without you."
"Funny."
"I’m glad you’re here brother." Ikron said returning to
his usual state of seriousness.
"I’m glad to be here."
"You don’t mind that I messed up your career?"
"So you admit to it."
"I don’t think I could deny it if I tried. I’m so like dad it’s
frightening."
"You’re not like dad. You didn’t leave behind a wife and kids for
your fling. Nor is it a fling. Besides I have a feeling if the dragon and
the bandits hadn’t been there you’d have dropped her off and spent the
rest of your life wondering."
"How come you know me that well?"
"Easy, you talk in your sleep."
"Guys!!" Mireille yelled loudly.
Evron and Ikron turned simultaneously, waiting to see what was wrong.
"I found something!"
Evron and Ikron ran towards her. Mireille was standing near a sandy mound.
At first neither of the guys saw what the hustle was about. Not until they
saw some sand wiped away at the edges revealing some eggs.
Mireille bend down and grabbed one, this time making sure she didn’t lose
her balance. She got up again and felt the smooth egg. It was warm and
fuzzy. She smiled at the feeling. Suddenly something stirred inside and out
popped a small bronze dragon.
"Is this a dragon?" Mireille wanted
to know.
"How can it be, we still need to be entered.
Besides he seems too small to grow so large." Ikron said.
"I think I saw some people walk around with
these." Evron said as he bent down also grabbing an egg.
"I might as well join you." Ikron
said, though he still felt guilty about the last rule he broke.
One after the other, the two eggs burst open. Evron’s had a small green
female inside, a real lady that immediately stretched herself out on his
arm, biting his fingers lightly.
"She’s hungry!" he said.
"Mine is too." Mireille said handing
out some sandwiches she had still in her pockets.
"Where did you get those?" asked
Ikron, happy to have something to feed his white female.
"I figured I didn’t know what was going to
happen this afternoon, so I brought sandwiches just in case we got caught
again."
"Paranoid." Evron said shaking his head.
"Sensible." Ikron replied.
"I think you’ve just changed brother
mine." Evron said grinning.
Gyne
- Ylmis
- Idora
"There you are! I was just
talking about you to Gerlana" P'mir said.
"How was your day?" the imposing woman asked.
"It was fine thanks." Mireille answered.
Some trays of food passed by and the sleeping firelizard on her arm awoke.
The Bronze opened one eye and yawned.
"No longer alone I see." P'mir said.
"No, we found these by accident." Evron said holding up his green
firelizard.
Ikron lifted up his long pony tail and let see the small white body
underneath. Ylmis was still sleeping, oblivious of the presence of food and
people.
"Now that you are really members of a Weyr," Gerlana started, pointing
at their firelizards, "I'll take you to your rooms and give you your
task charts for tomorrow. After that I'll give you a new one every day,
depending on the work that needs to be done."
"Free slave labour." Evron suggested.
"Indeed, and everyone considers it a privilege. So will you once you
have a little dragon to take care off." Gerlana said and laughed.
End of Candidacy.
