THE HATCHING

"Rzk?"
"I'm here Trri."
Rzk said.
Trri relaxed. He had called his older brother every morning since they had arrived on the Vella Crean. Rzk was all he had left now. Maybe once, when they had impressed dragons they could return to their home planet. Until then they were lonely.
"Do you think we'll ever get home?"
"I don't know."
Rzk answered looking outside to the activity of the Adoption place.
"But once we've got the dragons."
"We could go back."
Rzk said, still looking out.
Trri got out of his bed. It was still rather early in the morning. Trri dressed himself with the clothes the people of the Crean had given him. They fitted, but once he grew taller than his adolescent 2 metres he'd have to get clothes made especially for him. Trri wasn't one who wanted people to have problems with him.
A sudden cry interrupted their usual routine of breakfast and work. The dragons were singing... Trri rushed to the window, nearly pushing his brother away in youthful enthusiasm.
"Are they really hatching?!" he yelled.
Trri turned toward Rzk who was already running toward the door. Trri started running and caught up with his brothers. As they entered the sands they saw a lot of people and candidates had already made it to the sands. Trri wanted to walk straight to the other candidates, but Rzk held him back.
"No need to draw attention to ourselves." he said.
Trri shrugged. It was true that people had looked rather shocked when they had entered the settlement... but surely the people weren't afraid of them. If they need fear anyone, it would be those cold rulers of the Dark court. Trri didn't much like them.
The first eggs hatched. Two crimson red dragons emerged and found their bonds. Trri watched envious as he saw the humans take off with their dragons. He was happy for them, but he so wanted his own to take care of... and to be taken care of. Rzk had been a wonderful brother, but Trri felt he needed more. The next eggs cracked revealing a green and a brown.
The hatchlings, about the size of puppies, meaning they didn't even reach to the knees of the slightly oversized brothers came crawling their way. Rzk took a step back, pulling Trri with him.
"Wha?" Trri started
"My name is Xrribeth." said the green in the mind of Trri.
Trri laughed at the sensation of warmth that came through the bond. He looked up at his brother, eyes radiating his joy. But Rzk was busy tending his own dragon, the brown that had hatched along with the green.
"Si klio?" Xriibeth asked.
Trri surprised that the dragon was able to speak in his native tongue said:

"Of course we'll be happy!"

"Then don't be sad anymore."
"I won't Xrribeth." Trri said and smiled, forcing the memories of his parents and friends to the back of his mind.

Xrribeth

TEENS
Xrribeth watched as Mnnibuth, for the umpteenth time that morning, crashed down a mountain like he was a brick. A big brick. At least now he knew how to balance himself enough to land. Xriibeth knew he wanted it too much. he was too tense. But tell him that!
"Why won't it work?" he asked sad, "Even Xrribeth can fly!"
"You're just a  latebloomer." Rzk, his rider said, "One day we'll show them."
"Do you think that day is tomorrow? I mean, I'm feeling embarassed."
"Practice makes perfect." Rzk said determined.
Mnnibuth sighed. Xrribeth felt sorry for him. Trying once more might not be such a waste of effort.
"Maybe you try to hard." the soft green voice of Xrribeth said.
"Not trying won't do anything good." the brown flared.
"But you won't have fun."
"I'll have fun after I fly."
"Whatever you say."
Xrribeth sighed and returned to her own thoughts. At this rate, Mnnibuth would be an old dragon before he actually managed to stay airborn.

ADULTS
Trri looked as Xrribeth soared through the sky, twisting and turning, spiralling and flipping as if she was at a circus. The sun radiated of her skin and she looked prettier than any other green in the Vella Crean. Or that was Trri's opinion anyway.
"Do you think others might feel so too?" her soft, warm, caring voice asked.
"Everyone who sees you will love you." Trri said with the adoration of a puppy.
"Good." the green said smugly, "Then it won't be hard."
"What will?"
"Getting dragons to sign up on the flight boards to chase me."
"Eh!?"
"Haven't you seen my hide? I'm pretty sure this is a glow."
"No way! What about me?"
"I'm sure there are enough nice riders out there." Xrribeth shrugged.
"I'm more worried about their gender." Trri sighed, "And their origins."
"You wouldn't like human males?" Xrribeth giggled.
"Not really, no."
